This scarce 175-year-old Pacific travel book provides a counterpoint to missionary and naval narratives: it’s written from a trader’s perspective. Still cited in academic works on Polynesian history and colonial encounters, the easily readable semi-autobiographical travel narrative covers 12 years of Lucett’s peregrinations through Polynesia and the Pacific islands, particularly Tahiti, Tonga, Samoa and Fiji. The “glance” at Gold Rush California (particularly San Francisco) is a must. Two volumes bound in one blind-stamped thick Octavo hardback, around five inches by more than eight tall, by Wesley’s & Co, London. Lower board detached, but present; upper board hanging on. Provenance: in use in 1917 by New Zealand Government Office, London [as photos]. First edition published by Longman Brown Green et al London, in 1851. Free from textual emendation. Although interior condition is overall acceptable, because this original letterpress book is approaching two centuries old, its text-block displays other signs of use and age – the usual age-toning to old paper; some pages uncut (as originallty issued) while others are loose although present – consistent with a printed object 175 years old. All xii preliminary pages + 351 pp main text (Vol I) + xi preliminary pages + 371 pp main text (Vol II) are complete and essentially correct.
