Rare second edition of this book, which was printed the previous year with no map or plates in it. This example with the folding map titled map of the gold region from an actual survey by direction of Com. Front desk is a color lithograph bird eye view of San Francisco 1850 by PS Duval of Philadelphia. Book also contains three other wood engraved plates for a total of five plates, including the map. Blue cloth binding is rubbed, stained and worn along the spine ends tips and extremities, but the gilt remains visible and bright enough to enjoy the decorative designs and large image on the front cover of a miner at work. Internally slightly shaken with signatures protruding slightly from the text block. Scattered light to moderate foxing throughout, remains clean and well preserved with a fine patina and visual appeal. Evidence of former owners book plate removal from front paste down.
