This listing is for the four original oil paintings that you can see in the photos. All four paintings are signed and I believe that all four are by John Leonard Checkley. My research tells me that they were likely painted in the 1970’s or 1960’s. Each one of the frames measures close to 12? By 14 7/8 inches. Each framed painting weighs close to 1 pound 8.8 ounces. The boards that the paintings are painted on each measure slightly less than 8×10 in. The scenes look like San Franciso to me. The somewhat orange painting of the Golden Gate Bridge is painted on a Fredrix board. The signature is somewhat different in appearance than the signatures on the other three but I believe that it is also by Chekley. I say that because it was with the other three that have similar frames and it has identifying numbers on the reverse like the two of the other three do. The numbers are #973c and H7948. Also, the style is similar to the style of the other three. The painting with what looks like some kind of Chinese establishment has the number 6216 on the reverse. The painting of the Golden Gate does not have a number on the reverse. It is on a Blue Boy board. The painting of what looks like the Coit Tower has the has the number 20751 and a Cory Gallery sticker on the reverse. A biography that I found on the internet reads as follows. He has developed a unique style in acrylics, gaining immediate recognition for himself and winning an enthusiastic following in art circles across the nation. Checkley completed his schooling in New Zealand’s St. Andrews College and went on the major in art at the University of New Zealand. He entered the advertising profession only to have his career interrupted by three years of military service in the Pacific area during World War II. Following the war, he concentrated on graphic arts where his career led him to the U. It was shortly thereafter that John joined Batten, Barton, Durstine and Osborn, one of the world’s great ad agencies in New York City. Checkley held a successful series of one-man shows in NY before moving to San Francisco in 1955. In the City by the Bay, he appeared on numerous media events and conducted classes in painting. Checkley’s art work hangs in numerous private collections and are prominently displayed in the permanent collections of the New York Historical Society and in the Bank of New York. A realist by nature, Checkley interprets the many faces of San Francisco as he sees them. Checkley and his family (wife & two children) lived most of their later years on a houseboat converted from a World War II landing craft — moored in Sausalito, California. John Checkley died in California in 1991. The condition is much like you see it in the photos. Tthe frames are generally all in good to very good condition with a little bit of light scuffing here and there. The painting of Coit Tower has a small spot where there is paint missing and it appears that the board has discolored the paint to the left and right of the of the spot. You can see what I mean and close ups. They do not look dirty to me but the frames and the paintings might benefit from a light cleaning. Otherwise these paintings are fine and as shown my photo should give you a good idea of their general condition. I guarantee this lot to be as described and represented by the photos. The photos are part of the description. Please look at all of them. Please note that the lighting in my photos is uneven and there might be shadows or reflections. The colors on my monitor look close to but not exactly like the actual colors. Different monitors may show different colors. I often say that an item measures or weighs “approximately” or “close to” because no measurements are exact, and some things are difficult to measure. Often, I have a box custom made for items that I do not have a used box for which might result in a short delay. When I use packing peanuts, they are usually made from biodegradable materials.
