View of San Francisco, California, taken from Telegraph Hill, April 1850, by. 17 1/2 in x 26 in. California Historical Society Quarterly (1932) 11 (4): 363-364. Houses and buildings along street in center, some with signs bearing business names. Signal house in left foreground; tents, miner and goats on slope. View of San Francisco. Matted and framed original print by Wm. McMurtrie, 1851 Here’s a nice antique print of a view of San Francisco in 1850. Drawn by William B. McMurtrie, a draftsman for the U. Surveying Expedition, it shows a southward view of the city looking down Sansome Street from Telegraph Hill. Most of the buildings visible had been constructed after the Gold Rush in 1849, so the paint was probably still wet on them. Plus, you don’t normally see the goats in the foreground much these days on Telegraph Hill. Printed at lower right of print is: LITH. CURRIER 152 NASSAU ST. COR OF SPRUCE N. The print is nicely detailed and hand-colored with watercolors. The upper corners of the printed area have rounded corners. Print area is 20-3/4″ by 11-3/4″, matting is 2-1/2″ wide, and frame is 27″ by 18-1/2. The print and matte are under glass. This print is moderately water-stained, heavily on the lower fourth. 1851′ is penciled in just above McMurtrie’s name. Printed (LC, below title): taken from Telegraph Hill, April 1850 by Wm. McMurtrie, daughtsman of the US Surveying Expedition; (LL): On stone by F. Currier, 152 Nassau St[reet], cor[ner] of Spruce, N[ew] Y[ork]; (MC): Entered… (LC): Published by N.
