An older painting on cradled wood panel by San Francisco artist Kelly Tunstall from her Playboy Bunny series of ladies. Lots of pink in this piece featuring a reclining lady in fishnet stockings with garters, white ballet flats, bunny ears, and gold hot pants with white lacey trim. She’s got a white heart on her chest. Gold stars in pink bubbles float around her. The medium looks to be acrylic paint and then pen & ink drawn over that. Brush and ink wash as seen in the figure’s hair. Based on the age in the signature, this would’ve been painted in 2002, possibly while in her last year of school or just after graduation. Signed along the lower right in ink kelly tunstall. Condition:light wear, no major losses. The corners have some wear and unevenness, dings and dents. There is some wear to the gold stars and two small scuffs above the star at the left. The panel is structurally solid with a saw tooth hanger on the back. Kelly Tunstall is a San Francisco-based artist known for her paintings of elongated, large-eyed female figures. She is a part of an artistic collective KeFe consisted of her and her life partner Ferris Plock. A prominent figure on the San Francisco art scene, Tunstall works with a range of materials that include collage, pencil, acrylic, spray paint, pen and ink, gold leaf and some secret ingredients in order to create illustrations, installations, and multimedia projects. Tunstall is born in 1979, and in 2002 she received her BA from California College of Arts and Crafts. For more than a decade she works and exhibits with her partner and husband, Ferris Plock. They intertwine in their roles of painters, parents, and partners, often working together on the same canvas or preparing work for their mutual exhibition. But more importantly, they influence and complement each other artistically. Cartoonish, surreal girls, pastel hues, and simplicity in the composition are Tunstall’s trademarks. One can easily tell the difference between their painting and drawing styles, but both manage to harmoniously blend and illuminate each other’s artistic visions. KeFe is a moniker under which they explore their artistic and everyday communication and habits. The results are fantastic, large scale colorful pictures of wondrous creatures. Working in acrylic, collage, spray paint, pencil, pen and ink, gold leaf and some secret sauce, the experimental, yet classically grounded works live some what comfortably in a space between graphic expression, stylized representation, surrealism, and sketch. The patina of age and calligraphic drawing methods lend further depth to her story-filled worlds. The simplicity of the messages are enhanced by the underlying vitality and complex layering within the work. In her portraits, Tunstall renders stylized female figures and their adaptations to environment: nests built of painted boards held together by drawn nails or far off planets. The physical form and its accompanying exterior become a mirror for internal thought processes and turmoil. For instance, frequent themes such as mermaids, twins, or extra limbs concede a desire, a reliance, an adaptation, or more simply, an aspiration to something greater than being in the painting they inhabit. Also working in illustration, installation, and multimedia projects, Tunstall plays with the contrast between a compositional formality and a more casual revelation of method.
