This sweet scene of a young child playing with her doll. Geneve utilizes a sketch like quality with a large brush strokes and light pastel colors which gives this figurative work a serene setting, a motive that intrigue many artists of the time a child holding a doll. Probably an early painting in her career with very loose brush strokes. Painting is signed on the right side. Measurements: 14 x 16″ inches and (19 x 21″ framed). It comes in very fine, hand carved frame. Geneve Rexford sergeant was born in San Francisco in 1868. When she graduated from high school she began Saturday classes at San Francisco Art Association in 1888, at the time when Emil Carlsen, landscape painter, was its Director. When Carlsen left the Art Association in 1889 to teach at the San Francisco Art Students League, Geneve followed him. She continued to study there for four months. In 1890 she travel to Phoenix, Arizona where she met her future husband Winthrop Webster Sergeant. She continued to travel with her parents and made friends with many prominent artists introduced to her through Emil Carlsen. She return to San Francisco in 1891 where she opened a studio on Montgomery Street. She continued painting until 1957. She was historically significant early California woman artist. Her work is in permanent collection in Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, California. This painting is in very fine, original condition. There are no touch ups or restorations.
