Self portrait of William Shew, a prominent Civil War-era. Daguerreotypist who was active in San Francisco during the Gold Rush. He was a case maker in Massachusetts and moved to San Francisco in 1851, setting up his “Moveable Daguerreotype Saloon” enabling him to travel. During Japan’s first diplomatic mission to the US in 1860, She made a portrait of Yukichi Fukuzawa. A philosopher and educator who was part of the embassy’s staff. The photo was among the most famous in Japanese history in its day and included Shew’s daughter, Theodora, in one of the earliest photos of a white woman to be seen in Japan. After studying at the University of California at Berkeley, New York-born Oscar Maurer opened a photography studio in San Francisco. He became an associate member of Alfred Stieglitz’s Photo-Secession and the first California-based photographer to achieve national prominence. The only entrant from California in the first Chicago Camera Club Salon of 1900, Maurer received critical acclaim for his atmospheric landscape photograph. Encouraged by this success, he helped establish the first San Francisco Salon, held at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art in 1901. Maurer regularly contributed his Pictorialist landscape photographs to. The journal of the California Camera Club, and to. Stieglitz’s influential publication. In 1906 Maurer, like many Bay Area photographers, lost his studio and its contents in the San Francisco earthquake and fire. New mat size: 20 x 16 inches. William Dassonville was an American photographer who was born in 1879. William Dassonville has had several gallery and museum exhibitions, including at the Portland Museum of Art, Maine and the Joseph Bellows Gallery, La Jolla. Born in Sacramento, California, in 1879 to middle-class parents, William Edward Dassonville and his family moved to San Francisco when he was a child. He joined San Francisco’s avant-garde Camera Club, attending their lectures, trips, and exhibitions as well as writing articles for Camera Craft, the club’s publication. In his twenties, he became acquainted with the city’s artists including William Keith, George Stirling, Maynard Dixon, and John Muir, whom he later photographed in the portrait studio he opened with Oscar Maurer in 1900. Although the studio was destroyed by the 1906 earthquake, Dassonville managed to salvage some of his work. He supported himself by taking portraits but continued to make beautiful platinum prints of the California landscape in the pictorialist style. In the 1920s, he shifted his focus to San Francisco’s waterfront, skyline, and architecture. These impressionist images were printed on Dassonville’s own “Charcoal Black” paper. In response to the shortage of platinum printing paper with the onset of World War I, the photographer and self-taught chemist developed an alternative paper coating that had the tonal intricacy of platinum that was heralded by Ansel Adams, Imogene Cunningham, and many others. Although Dassonville won numerous prizes and awards and exhibited his pictorialist landscapes alongside the work of Alfred Stieglitz, Clarence H. White, Gertrude Kasebier, and other pioneering photographers during his life, he was a relatively unknown medical photographer at Stanford University at the time of his death in 1957. His reputation was rehabilitated when two California art dealers found a trove of Dassonville’s work in a pair of trunks several years ago. Like late nineteenth century paintings, Dassonville’s rich tonal photographs infuse both people and places with a haunting and ethereal quality while honoring photography’s place within the fine arts.

A late 19th century oil on canvas of a beautiful sunset-landscape from Oakland California. A girl in the foreground can be seen in the lower left. Keith was schooled early romanticized views at Dusseldorf School of Germany. Keith was primarily a landscape painter. In his later years his style was influenced by the Barbizon School Landscape painters. This was a precursor to the Impressionist School. Keith drew his inspiration directly from nature. William Keith found favor with the culturally aspiring San Francisco nouveau rich. He was so sought after in his day; he was the wealthiest, most sought after artist in California. He was known in some circles as the Dean of California Painters. His San Francisco studio was destroyed in the fires of the 1906 earthquake. Taking with it many works of art.
