Published for the History of the World by Henry Bill, New York. Fine early view of San Francisco, looking out over the City from the West towards Yerba Buena Island. Published only 5 years after the beginning of the Gold Rush in 1849, the view shows the boom town and remarkable growth of the City. Though by this time San Francisco was a bustling, robust settlement, it was still quite a small community, with the buildings merging rapidly into the rural surrounding hills. 16 x 9 inches, very good condition for age, quite clean and great color! Does have a very small repaired stub tear of 3/4 inch in the border margin (does not extend into lithograph).

5 x 5″ image on 8.75 x 6.75″ sheet. This color lithograph is one of the first American views of the Golden Gate ever produced. The perspective looks east from the Pacific Ocean through the Golden Gate and into the Bay of San Francisco. From the coloring and lighting, it appears this is an early morning scene, with the sun still emerging from behind the horizon. In the distance, we see a prominent peak, representing either a much exaggerated Angel Island or Mt. The image itself is circular but has been framed with a decorative arabesque border of branches and leaves that form a perfect square around it. Despite our best efforts to identify the origins of this image, we have not been able to determine exactly where it was originally printed or who might have created it in the first place. A printed text on the bottom of the image reads: Entered according to Act of Congress in the Year 1855 by Tho. L Hardgrove in the clerks office of the District Court of the South. However, we have found no evidence to identify the brothers Hardgrove, nor have we been able to find clues as to the artist or the original venue for its publication. Furthermore, we have not been able to locate a single institutional copy of this early view. The purpose of the piece is also a mystery. It could also be related to a variety of types of print matter, such as invitations, stationery, or songs. Our best hypothesis is that it is some type of product label, which might also explain why it has been printed asymmetrically on the sheet i. Along the right fringe of the paper rather than centered. What we have discovered, however, is that up until 1855, only very few images of the Golden Gate exist, and these are almost always early drawings and sketches (or reproductions of them). One such example is Daniel Wadsworth Coit’s pencil drawing from 1849, which now is held in the Bancroft Library of UC Berkeley Call no. BANC PIC 1899.001:08-fALB. Another is a gorgeous watercolor by Pennsylvania-born artist William Henry Meyers, who first came to San Francisco during the US-Mexican War but stayed there to document the Gold Rush. Like Coit’s drawing, Meyers’ watercolor is also held in the Bancroft Library Call no. BANC PIC 1981.029-FR. There are even earlier depictions than these, but in most cases these are either executed and printed by visiting Europeans e. French surveyor Romuald Georges Menard’s depiction from around 1839 or Fritz Wikersheim’s drawing of the Golden Gate as seen from Telegraph Hill in San Francisco, c. 1848 or they have only survived in the early photographic records of people such as Charles C Pierce California Historical Society No. For actual color lithographs produced in the United States by Americans, the best contemporary example is a dramatic composition by the American artist Thomas A. Like our lithograph, this is undated but was inscribed in the Library of Congress the same year and under the same law as our image. Neither the Ayres nor our image are found among the digitized holdings of the Library of Congress although an example of the Ayres print is held in the Bancroft Library: Call no. BANC PIC 1963.002:1402-FR. Ultimately, it is extremely difficult to determine exactly which of these two renditions is the earliest and thus the first separately-published American view of this iconic San Francisco landmark. However, it is apparent that when our image was first printed, only a handful of such depictions would have existed in the world.

This 1990 promotional map of Alameda by T. Graphics features a clever distortion of perspective to fill the majority of the map with Alameda Island. The viewer looks west; beyond Alameda. San Francisco Bay is reduced in size and shape such that the Bay and Golden Gate Bridges are almost on top of each other. This cartographic trick allows for a detailed presentation of business and professional services. Maps promoting local commercial interests became popular in the 1980s and 1990s, but this is the rare map that also has caricatures of the business owners themselves. Check it out and enjoy! Alameda is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. It is located on Alameda Island and Bay Farm Island. It is adjacent to and south of Oakland and east of San Francisco across the San Francisco Bay. Alameda occupies what was originally a peninsula connected to Oakland. Much of it was low-lying and marshy. The higher ground nearby and adjacent parts of what is now downtown Oakland were the site of one of the largest coastal oak forests in the world. Alameda is Spanish for’grove of poplar trees,’ or’tree-lined avenue. It was chosen as the name of the city in 1853 by popular vote.

A whimsical pictorial view of the Potrero Hill, Dogpatch, and Mission Bay neighborhoods of San Francisco, produced in 1988 by City Graphics. It serves as an important reminder of the drastic changes, as well as some continuities, in the area over the past several decades. The view is oriented towards the north, with San Francisco Bay at right and the U. 101 highway at left. Interstate-280 also appears towards the right, giving the viewer some recognizable landmarks for orientation. However, liberties have been taken with geography and perspective, which are’twisted,’ perhaps to fit in more businesses. A text box above the title introduces the neighborhood and its history, including its growth in the aftermath of the 1906 earthquake and fire. Several of the businesses present here still exist, including but not limited to the Bottom of the Hill, Goat Hill Pizza, the Bay View Boat Club, and the Anchor Brewing Co. San Francisco’s oldest brewery (recently closed, perhaps forever). Others were local institutions at the time but have since closed, such as the Pickle Family Circus. The area near the Mission Creek Channel (the greenspace at top-center) has undergone tremendous change since this view was published. At that time, it was a mostly industrial area, but has since been redeveloped, with luxury condominiums and high-end restaurants adjacent to the newly-built Chase Center (home of the Golden State Warriors), UCSF Mission Bay medical campus, and the Kaiser Permanente Mission Bay Medical Offices. Another notable addition is the San Francisco Muni’s T Third Street light rail line, which began operations in 2007 and was recently extended to Union Square and Chinatown via the Central Subway project. This view was designed and illustrated by Rob Zell-Breier and published by City Graphics in 1988.
