Adams rose to prominence as a photographer of the American West, particularly Yosemite National Park, using his work to promote conservation of wilderness areas. He died in Monterey, California, on April. 1945 Ansel Adams founds the first fine art photography department at the San Francisco Art Institute. Faculty include Dorothea Lange, Imogen Cunningham, Minor White, Edward Weston, and Lisette Model. Ansel Adams was one of the most distinguished photographers ever. He received several awards both during his lifetime and after he passed away. Some of those awards include the Hasselblad Award (1981), the Sierra Club John Muir Award (1963), and he was also entered into the California Hall of Fame in 2007. Vernal and Nevada Falls from Washburn’s Point, Yosemite Valley, Cal. 7 7/8 x 9 5/8 inches. Rich tonal image, sharp and clean, light residue from previous mounting on verso. Less common early Carleton Watkins view of the Yosemite Valley from Washburn’s Point showing Vernal and Nevada Falls in the distance. Especially rich tonal example of this particular vantage point published later by Taber. The Getty museum holds an example without the Taber credit line and titled. Half Dome, a granite dome in Yosemite Valley, Yosemite National Park, California. He created a remarkable documentation of this natural wonder leading to its designation as a National Park. Isaiah West Taber was another San Francisco institution opening his own studio there in 1871 and somewhat the better business man than his contemporary Carleton Watkins. Acquiring Watkins’ print and negative stock following the photographer’s bankruptcy in 1881, he managed to successfully sell many of Watkins’ early views of the west and California with his own studio credit, rarely if ever crediting Watkins. Ironically, when the 1906 earthquake struck, it also destroyed Taber’s own negative and print collection including his holdings of Carleton Watkins works reported as eighty tons of portrait negatives and twenty tons of view negatives. Great historic photo perfect for a Silicon Valley Tech Company Headquarters Art or Area Estate Collection. Light fading to colors likely. Back has toning with some smudge marks. My watermark is not on actual item. This was removed from framing. The corrugated cardboard backing showing the framer of Webbs of San Jose will be included for historical purposes. One reference to Webbs I found online was in 1954 stating that Webb’s had been in business for 40 years then but had a few locations. Unknown to me how long the First St location had been there. A rare, unique vintage color lithograph pictorial / illustrated map, “A Map Showing San Francisco and the Sacramento Valley in the Year 1849, ” from 1929, by artist CEJ. CEJ is Charles Everett Johnson, from Gilroy, California, just south of San Francisco. He was born in 1866, and practiced art and graphic design in Southern California, until the 1940s. This is a particularly rare map in that regard! While this map is marked CEJ 1929, others from this series Chicago, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Washington, D. Boston, and New York City are marked differently, including no markings, CEJ, CEJ 29, or CEJ 1929. May be plates from a book or magazine, but I have been unable to find any others like it! For conditions, please review photos closely using the magnifying tool or zoom in!
