Hyde’s photographs of the American West were used in more environmental campaigns than those of any other photographer. Later in his career Hyde, along with Eliot Porter, became the leading pioneers in advancing color landscape photography as an art form. Hyde made his first landscape photograph in 1942 and trained directly under Ansel Adams, Minor White, Imogen Cunningham, Dorothea Lange and other renowned photographers at the California School of Fine Arts which is now the San Francisco Art Institute. He was the only full time professional landscape photographer who learned his craft directly from these historic artists and became a master darkroom printer in his own right. In most cases Hyde made only 2 or 4 prints of a given image and on rare occasions would print 8 prints from a specific negative but, never more. These extremely low print numbers (Ansel Adams routinely printed hundreds of prints from a negative) have resulted in Hyde’s vintage silver gelatin prints being extremely rare and mostly unavailable (long ago snapped up by savvy collectors). A small number of Hyde’s vintage silver gelatin prints were offered by a handful of prestigious photography galleries Weston Gallery, Scott Nichols Gallery, etc. Our thanks to Philip Hyde’s son David Leland Hyde (an accomplished landscape photographer himself and preservationist of his father’s work) for some of the insights and information contained in this listing. An Artist known for his Atmospheric Landscapes and his Portraits he painted many portraits of the S. Opera Stars being that he was a patron. He was born in Germany (where they did a Retrospective on him in 1971) and moved to San Francisco after studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin. Here is an Impressive example of his work titled “Olive Tree – France” within a Landscape and Building on a distant Hill surrounded by Trees. This Incredible Atmospheric Painting by a famous Artist was part of a very nice Art Collection held by a dear Friend who we recently lost – he was a Rhodes Scholar, Art Historian and Attorney. It is signed and dated’36 in the lower left corner – while held within a very nice frame. It also comes with a great brochure on the Artist, which has a note to my friends parents and his signature where he gave it to them in 1948 – it also comes with a photo of the painting and the title on the back of the photo. This Wonderful original Painting is in Excellent Condition. It’s Wood Frame is in Very Good Condition – would be excellent but it has a small 7/8 inch dent in it’s upper left corner (which you can see in photo #10). This Dynamic and Beautiful California Atmospheric Impressionist Painting measures 21 1/4 inches by 17 3/4 inches in it’s sight size and with it’s matting and frame it is 31 inches by 27 3/4 inches. Early California Arts & Crafts watercolor. Newspaper advertisements put E. Courvoisier on Sutter Street in the 1905-12ish era. The wagon wheel tracks suggest pre-auto, though early autos did have skinny tires. In 1906 Sutter St. Was destroyed by the San Francisco earthquake.
