Two rare CDVs taken in Benicia, California by San Francisco photographer Silas Selleck. The first shows the Benicia Brewery, the name visible on the sign above the building. The second image shows downtown Benicia, with some pedestrians and store signs visible.. A very readable one handing above the door of A. McDonell’s Dry Goods & Groceries store. I found McDonell’s store in an 1860s Benicia directory. Both are 4″ x 2.5″ and in very good antique condition with light foxing.

ANTIQUE Cabinet Card Set JULY 4TH PARADE PHOTOS 1903 California GOLD RUSH TOWN. EIGHT Original 1903 FOURTH OF JULY PARADE PHOTOGRAPHS from the San Francisco Bay Area East Bay Contra Costa Town of ANTIOCH. Each photographic is different view of the parade. The photographs were taken at the Antioch, California Fourth of July Parade along Second street across from the Arlington Hotel (of true crime fame in 1906 but that’s another story) which is next door to the Antioch Shoe Store R. Wall, Proprietor with the edge of the L. Meyers Store showing farther down the street. From this same vantage point each richly detailed photograph shows different scenes of the parade. Festive horse drawn carriages, Western riders, beautifully dressed spectators, decorated floats, marching bands, flower and flag draped scenery. Eight (8) original 7″ x 10″ card mounted photographs circa 1903. One mount has HOIEN, ANTIOCH, CAL embossed on the front, the rest are unmarked. VERY GOOD CONDITION: The photographs are bright and clean, the card mounts have light edgewear, 1903 is written in pencil on the front bottom margins, one mount has a penned number beneath the penciled date, one has a corner chip, the backs of the mounts have black paper remnants from being removed from an album, and a few have a penned name to the back top margin, and the mounts are slightly warped, otherwise a unique collection of original photographs. The San Francisco Bay Area town of Antioch is one of the oldest towns in California. Founded in 1850 just after gold was discovered in the region, it was incorporated in 1872 and flourished as a mining, farming, and dairy community tied to the region by the railroad and deep water ports.

He explored the expressive potential of abstraction and his prints reveal poetic evidence of the spirit. Oliver Gagliani was born to an Italian America family in Placerville, California in 1917 and lived most of his life in San Francisco. His passion for music began in elementary school and he played the violin through college. In 1946, while intending to go to the San Francisco Symphony at the War Memorial Opera House, he mistakenly walked next door into the San Francisco Museum of Art (at the time housed in the War Memorial Veterans Building). There he saw the traveling retrospective of Paul Strand organized by the Museum of Modern Art in 1945. Gagliani recalled that: It was beautiful, his counterpoint of light and shade, object and space, just as in the music I had studied for so long. It was this exhibition of Strand’s work and the 1946 retrospective of Edward Weston’s work at the museum which compelled Gagliani to explore photography as a means of self expression. That same year he took an intensive course with Ansel Adams and later in 1964 he took a workshop with Minor White. During many family vacations Gagliani traveled to California State Parks and ghost towns in Nevada to photograph. His first two solo exhibitions were at the George Eastman House in 1955 and at the San Francisco Museum of Art in 1957 and he went on to exhibit extensively throughout his career. At the encouragement of Jack Welpott and Leland Rice, Gagliani went back to school and received an MFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts in 1972, which enabled him to teach photography at universities and colleges. For decades he also taught many photography workshops. Books on Gagliani include: Oliver Gagliani (Ideograph, 1975); Oliver Gagliani: Past and Present: Photographs (Museo ItaloAmericano, 1987); and Oliver Gagliani: Scores of Abstraction (Center for Photographic Art, 2006).
