A vintage perhaps 1950’s or 1960’s watercolor painting of Mission Dolores, in San Francisco, signed illegibly at lower right. The work, 9 by 12″ (15″ by 18 in a quality Jerry Solomon distressed-style frame) is beautifully executed by a trained artist. The name “Helmuth Wagner” has been suggested but perhaps we are mis-reading the signature. There are minor paper digs at top above the roof and at lower left, showing as lighter areas.

About the artist, from Festival of Arts Pageant of the Masters: A native of Southern California and now in his twenty-seventh summer at the Festival, Michael Obermeyer received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration at California State University, Long Beach. A twenty year career in illustration included works for Disney Studios, the Anaheim Angels, McDonnell Douglas, Coldwell Banker, and the United States Air Force. Because of his illustration background, he is equally comfortable with the landscape and the figure. Many of his paintings are in the U. Air Force Historical Art Collection in the Smithsonian Institute and the Pentagon. Michael was awarded the “Best of Show Award” at the 25th Annual Laguna Beach Invitational Plein Air Competition in 2023 and was presented with the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association “Lifetime Achievement Award” in 2015. He recently won the “Collector’s Choice, ” “Artist’s Choice” and the “Director’s Choice” Awards at the Laguna Beach Invitational as well as the “Best of Show” at both the Kern County Plein Air Invitational and the Grand Canyon Celebration of Art, and the Gold Medal at the Carmel Art Festival. Collectors include the Marriott Hotels and Resorts, The Irvine Company, Hoag Hospital, California State Parks and many corporate as well as private commissions. Michael is the President of the prestigious California Art Club, and is a Signature Member of the California Art Club and the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association. Currently, his paintings are showing at galleries in Carmel, Pasadena, Balboa Island and Santa Barbara. He maintains his studio in Laguna Beach, California.

Bottom right corner of photograph is signed “Joseph Photo” in ink by the gifted photographer. Verso is triple stamped and includes his home studio stamp. Measures 8″ x 10″ inches. BIOGRAPHY: Emmanuel Francis E. Born on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, Joseph later moved to the United States and attended the American School of Photography in Chicago. After graduation in 1924, Joseph moved to Oakland, California, where he operated a photography studio from home and began documenting life in the vibrant African American community in that existed in Central California. Starting in the early 1930s, he also working as a photojournalist for numerous Bay Area newspapers, including the California Voice, The Oakland Post, San Francisco Examiner. Joseph and his wife, Alyce, who assisted him, were especially active in the East Bay’s African American community. Original works by the photographer are especially hard to find. Oxxbridge Galleries was founded in 1987 and specializes in vintage paper items with a large selection of historical and 19th Century tintypes, daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, cabinet cards, carte des visites and other types of early photography.

These are artist signed colored pencil sketchings these are very well done and heavy framed the other sketching is the view of Oyster bay by Louis comfort Tiffany 1908 they are signed by the artist Ausen in 2013 these are in great shape the frames have a few small nicks see photos for condition on frame. [Japanese-American] [California] Pre and post WWII partially identified Japanese-American family residing in California photo archive. The collection comprises over 60 black-and-white snapshot and studio photographs of a Japanese American family associated with California from 1930s-1950s. Many views show familiar sites in San Francisco and Los Angeles, one studio portrait bears a photography studio stamp from Oakland, suggesting at least part of the family had ties to the Bay Area. Date inscriptions on verso and on the prints largely cluster in 1937-40, with later examples marked 1952 and 1953. Measurements range from 5″ x 7″ to 1″ x 1″ with most around 3″ x 4″. The precise relation of this individual to the family is unclear, though it is possible the image was sent into or out of internment-era correspondence. The range of images includes studio, graduation, and family group portraits, casual daily life, domestic settings, and travel or social gatherings. A recurring female figure appears from youth through motherhood, and a young adult male is scattered throughout, providing a through-line across decades. One prominent image is a graduation photo of a young woman signed as “Sayoko” dated 1937. A few photos of a young boy decades later in the early 1950s is shown, he is identified as “Kenny” with one of his parents signed off as “Sayo” which could refer to Sayoko, as there is also a family portrait of her, the same boy, and a Japanese American man. The juxtaposition of these photos showcase two vastly transformative times in her life from young adulthood to motherhood, with a decade long gap during the war. Several large format photos are shown of a traditional Japanese performance with women in kimonos, possibly indicating travel between countries. Another outdoor portrait of a different young woman is identified as “Miyoshi”. There are several photos of a recurring young Japanese-American man with glasses, often donning a suit, who is unidentified. Other photos show young couples aboard a boat, possibly on local ferries, a group photo of a man with his two sons in front of a U. Air Force B-36 Peacemaker, likely dating this image to the post-war experience. Other photos show extended family members and friends in mostly western attire, images if San Francisco and Beverly Hills, as well as a few aerial views of women in traditional Japanese attire in a Japanese botanical garden. The historical context of this archive is deeply intertwined with the experience of Japanese Americans before, during, and after World War II. In the prewar years, Japanese American communities in California enjoyed relatively stable middle-class lives, maintaining social, familial, and professional connections across Northern and Southern California. The use of studio portraits evidences the aspiration toward respectability and identification within American society. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, life changed dramatically. Government forcibly removed and detained over 120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast under Executive Order 9066. During internment, personal communications, including letters, photographs, and postcards, submitted to and from camps were often censored, with “Passed by Army Examiner” stamps or other military censor marks applied. The archive is not only in documenting a single family’s trajectory through a fraught historical era, but also is a visual record of Japanese American identity, resilience, and adaptation. The continuity of portraits spanning youth to parenthood hints at the maintenance of familial memory across disruptions. The geographic spread from San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Oakland, underscores that Japanese American life was not monolithic but spanned wide regional networks.
