DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS. ON ADDITIONAL TOLL CROSSINGS. OF SAN FRANCISCO BAY. DIVISION OF SAN FRANCISCO BAY TOLL CROSSINGS. This is a first edition printing of that report. This Report of Additional Toll Crossings of San Francisco Bay is a 144 page (not including the figures/drawings) softcover book, with tan covers and brown writing and drawing on the front cover. The report is illustrated with many glossy black and white photos, 15 tables, and 78 figures, many of which are fold-out drawings of the proposals in the report. Due to the congestion on the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, discussions were started in 1946 to build a parallel bridge and/or trans-bay tube to the existing San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, called The Parallel Bridge and Southern Crossing. This report is the results of the findings of the Division of San Francisco Bay Toll Crossings and is divided into three parts. Part one covers the history of trans-bay crossings, preceding investigations, the present problem. Part three is the summary and conclusions and the recommendations of the Division of San Francisco Bay toll Crossings. The report is in good plus condition with wear and fading to the covers. The last ten pages or so, as well as the back cover, have dog-eared lower right corners. No other loose or torn pages. No unwanted writing or notations that I could see. The report appears to be complete. This is a pretty cool piece of San Francisco Bay Area history. For those of us who commute on the highways of the Bay Area, we know how things turned out, but it’s pretty neat to see what the process was to get to where we are today.

This newspaper is destined to be–if not already–one of the premiere issues of the early 20th century. Due to the destruction of the presses in San Francisco, these three separate & competing newspapers combined under one masthead for this issue, printing the paper of this date across the bay on the presses of the Oakland Tribune. This issue is noteworthy in containing no advertisements but rather is replete in its four pages with reports on the earthquake and fire. Also worth noting is the missing dateline at the top of page 3 as this page is actually the same as the Oakland Tribune edition of April 18–they used it over again for this combined San Francisco issue. I once read that since normal distribution of the newspaper was severely disrupted, stacks of this issue were simply set out on the streets for passers-by to take. Complete with all four pages.
