Original 1915 Panama Pacific Expo End of the Trail Photograph Print by Cardinell Vincent of San Francisco California. After the sculpture by James Earl Fraser that was housed in the Tower of Jewels at the Panama Pacific Exposition in 1915 in San Francisco. Tinted sepia photograph print. Has stamped mark of Cardinell Vincent SF CO lower right. Could be original frame. Frame is carved in and out with gold tones. Nice frame though not a pie frame but still a nice frame. Frame measures 16 1/2 x 13 1/2 inches. Photograph image measures 13 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches. Not the smaller ones of 8 x 10 that were prints. Condition: Frame is excellent condition, photograph is in fine condition. There is an exposed area. Usually I take frames apart to find missing stuff or signatures but not this one.

Album consists of 218 silver gelatin photographs and measures 11.5″ x 15.25″, photographs range from 2.25″ x 2.75″ to 4.5″ x 5.5″. The 220 photographs are cornered in on black album pages and captioned either on the album paper or en verso of some photographs with dated inscriptions beginning in 1937. One such caption “July 19, 1938 / On Board S/S Dixie from New Orleans, La” helps trace a mobile itinerary that blends domestic tourism with Caribbean and Mexican excursions. The bulk of the photographs depict Southern California locales with particular attention to San Diego, Catalina Island, and Los Angeles. Labeled sites in California include Hollywood, Olvera Street, Balboa Park, Mission Beach and Alcatraz Island — San Francisco, Muir Woods, La Jolla, and the beachfront resort of the Hotel del Coronado. A vibrant sequence from Catalina Island showcases scenic vistas, small boats, and seaside leisure, including bathing scenes and cliffside views marked Sea Rocks off Catalina Island. Other images note Hollywood residences and Pasadena gardens, with one standout view of the Bernheimer Japanese Palace, later known as the Yamashiro Historic District. The group’s Cuban excursion, marked “Havana, Cuba, ” includes posed beach portraits, street scenes, and courtyard gatherings at what appears to be a hotel or guesthouse surrounded by tropical landscaping. This is a photo album promoting the city of San Francisco as the site of 1915’s Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE). It contains a few pages of text followed by 25 exceptional photographs taken by H. Per the first page of text: The completion of the Panama Canal, in 1915, is distinctly a Pacific Ocean event. It joins the Pacific with the Atlantic, and opens the Pacific to the commerce of the world. San Francisco, the largest American port on the Pacific, with its super harbor and its growing Oriental trade, is naturally the one fitting point where a great international celebration of this world event-the canal’s completion-should be held. It is to-day the last word, architecturally, among the nation’s great cities, with block after block of business buildings, hotels, apartment houses and private residences, all new, substantial and artistic, with every modern equipment. ” Per the finding aid for a Tibbits collection at the Online Archive of California, the photographer: “worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for 40 years starting in 1892. He photographed extensively in the American West, Canada and Mexico, documenting landscapes, towns, agriculture, parks, and other local scenes to help promote the railroad. His work as used in the railroad’s magazine Sunset started with the first publication in 1898. 16 photos depict urban areas in San Francisco and the other nine show area landscapes; all have detailed captions printed on the page. There are at least twelve street-level views including a great shot at Lotta’s Fountain at the junction of Market, Kearny and Geary Streets, one of Montgomery Street and another shows the Hotel Francis. There’s a shot of crowds at Golden Gate Park, a compelling image of the banking district, and another of Chinatown. We also see the San Francisco Bay, Mount Tamalpais, and the Yosemite Valley from Bridal Veil Meadows.
