View made off California St. This original sepia photo has a high gloss surface on quality photographic paper. It is a good view of the start of the fire, with people in the street. There is also a gentleman standing on the left corner of the roof in the foreground watching the disaster unfold. The sky is entirely filled with smoke. This photo is in good condition, the surface showing a couple of small indents, one horizontal and one vertical indent about 1/2 inch long in the upper right sky. There is a pencil or pen mark about the same size above and to the left of them. The card has a split right of center at lower edge (see photos), and the corners show some. Reverse has yellowed edges of card, and lightly written in pencil on right edge. Kearny & Montgomery Sts in flames. The card measures 11 7/8 inches wide by 10 inches. The photo measures 8 9/16 wide x 6 5/8 inches. All conditions given are an educated review of Beckett/PSA standards, as we are not professional graders. Offered is an original, collectible newspaper (NOT a copy/reproduction): STEAMER BULLETIN–FOR THE ATLANTIC STATES AND EUROPE, San Francisco, California, July 1, 1861 Rare steamship – steamer publication First year of the American Civil War “Steamer editions” are rarely found today. They were special editions meant for East Coast consumption–in this case Europe as well. This is an edition of the San Francisco Bulletin. As noted on page 4, the Daily Bulletin published every evening except Sunday. Four pages, never bound nor trimmed so it folds out to one large sheet, minor loss at the blank spine and two upper corners do not affect any text. Generally in good condition. The July 1, 1861, Steamer Bulletin represents a critical “information bridge” during one of the most volatile months in American history, arriving just weeks before the First Battle of Bull Run and months before the completion of the Transcontinental Telegraph. Published by the San Francisco Bulletin specifically for “the Atlantic States and Europe, ” this eight-page double sheet served as the definitive voice of the Pacific Coast, assuring Eastern and overseas readers of California’s steadfast loyalty to the Union despite the growing chaos of the Civil War. This is one of his abstract subjects with San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge in the background. The painting is on canvas board and measures 16″ x 12″ and is in good condition. With such action, life, and hidden things to discover, Cucaro truly captured feelings like no other. More figurative than abstract, with bold blues-complimented nicely by red accents dotting the crowd. Feel the hustle and bustle in the air, and the energy beckoning from this iconic painting. Pascal (Pat) Cucaro was born in Youngstown, Ohio on November 6, 1915, to Italian immigrant parents. He worked in the circus during his childhood summers — the experiences giving him a lifelong interest in clowns, and circus life. His painting style is characterized by a bold gestural quality, complimented by a thick application of paint. In some cases, the artwork has paint so thick it seems to have been applied straight from the tube. He became part of the art scene during the lively’Beat’ years in San Francisco’s North Beach section, and exhibited his work at the Black Cat Cafe, The Iron Pot, The Lion Book Shop, The City Lights Book Shop, Vesuvio’s, and The Hungry I. He was nominated for the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1965. He traveled extensively abroad to find new inspirations for his work — to Japan, Thailand, Burma, Sri Lanka, China, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Tahiti, and throughout Europe. He has explored a variety of subjects: clowns, circus scenes, boats, street scenes, still lifes, coffee shops, crowd themes (what Cucaro calls “people-people” paintings) animals, abstracts, portraits, and mediums such as oils, acrylics, plastic, ceramics, watercolors, tempera, etchings, india ink, ink/wash, and prints. From his Parisian sojourn, from his studies in private studios, his long strolls along the length of the Seine or across the French countryside, he has brought back pictures which some feel vibrate with some of the magic of his masters; Cezanne, Lautrec, Utrillo and Dufy.

Signed and inscribed lower right Rocky Pt. Likely depicting Red Rock Beach or Stinson Beach, where the artist frequented, or another San Francisco Bay coastal locale. About the artist, from Edan Hughes: Being from an upper class family, Farnsworth was well educated in England and later became a member of the British Royal Engineeers. While studying civil engineering in Paris, he became interested in painting and may have had some instruction there. From Paris, he moved to Canada where his sketching ability was of great use while working as a railroad surveyor. He then lived for several years in Spokane, WA and, while there, married an English woman. Upon coming to San Francisco in 1892, Farnsworth gained employment as an artist for the Examiner and, while in that capacity, painted many luminous watercolors. He later moved across the bay to Marin County where he was a resident of San Anselmo, Stinson Beach, and San Rafael. He sometimes painted with Thaddeus Welch and Louis Rea. His subject matter seldom varied from scenes of the San Francisco Bay area. From his brush came views of Mount Tamalpais and the Mann hills, the Golden Gate, Fort Point, and coastal scenes. An alcoholic, he died on Sept. 17, 1908 at Adler’s Sanitarium in San Francisco. Artists, Golden Gate Park Museum, 1915. In: San Jose Museum; De Young Museum; Mann Co.
