C1865-66 Albumen Print Vernal & Nevada Falls, Yosemite Valley, Carelton Watkins, Taber Publisher. Taber Publisher, San Francisco, California. Vernal and Nevada Falls from Washburn’s Point, Yosemite Valley, Cal. 7 7/8 x 9 5/8 inches. Rich tonal image, sharp and clean, light residue from previous mounting on verso. Less common early Carleton Watkins view of the Yosemite Valley from Washburn’s Point showing Vernal and Nevada Falls in the distance. Especially rich tonal example of this particular vantage point published later by Taber. The Getty museum holds an example without the Taber credit line and titled. Half Dome, a granite dome in Yosemite Valley, Yosemite National Park, California. He created a remarkable documentation of this natural wonder leading to its designation as a National Park. Isaiah West Taber was another San Francisco institution opening his own studio there in 1871 and somewhat the better business man than his contemporary Carleton Watkins. Acquiring Watkins’ print and negative stock following the photographer’s bankruptcy in 1881, he managed to successfully sell many of Watkins’ early views of the west and California with his own studio credit, rarely if ever crediting Watkins. Ironically, when the 1906 earthquake struck, it also destroyed Taber’s own negative and print collection including his holdings of Carleton Watkins works reported as eighty tons of portrait negatives and twenty tons of view negatives. A total of 845 California & Nevada Old Highway 40 [now I-80] postcards (ALL Postally Used), plus 165 associated matchcovers, 3 cachet covers, 4 maps, 1 photo and 1 business card ; 1,019 items overall. There are many eye level & aerial views, hotels, motels, inns, restaurants and other points of interest along the historic transcontinental Lincoln Highway. Items in this collection include towns & sights either directly along the highway or within its corridor as it makes its way west across Nevada & California, beginning at Wendover, Nevada and ending at the flagpole at the Palace of the Legion of Honor at Lincoln Park in San Francisco. Many of the larger cities & towns along the way are mostly excluded from this grouping such as Elko, Winnemucca, Lovelock, Sparks, Reno, Auburn, Sacramento, Berkeley and most of San Francisco, as they are listed & available separately. Not all postcards are shown and there often exist multiples of the same image. However, as all are postally used, they are individually unique. As is my custom, 38 items in this collection contain a real gold nugget from the American River at Coloma, California. All items are arranged and contained within six 3 -ring binders and are protected in clear archival sleeves. Because every postcard has been postally used, this unique collection provides an excellent historical archive of the individual visitor experiences & observations spanning the twentieth century.

Moire fabric paste downs and end papers, sewn in satin ribbon marker. The volume is edge rubbed with bumped corners and some chipping on the spine crown, tape on inside front, all pages clean and bright.
