Unsure of age but appears to be a vintage piece. Framed it measures slightly over 17×14″ and painting is approximately 14×11″. Please see photos for details and thank you for your interest! Mission San Francisco de Asís (Spanish: Misión San Francisco de Asís), commonly known as Mission Dolores, is a Spanish Californian mission and the oldest surviving structure in San Francisco, located in the Mission District. It was founded on October 9, 1776, by Padre Francisco Palóu (a companion of Junípero Serra) and co-founder Fray Pedro Benito Cambón, who had been charged with bringing Spanish settlers to Alta California and with evangelizing the local indigenous Californians, the Ohlone. Next to the old mission is the newer and larger Mission Dolores Basilica, built in 1918 in an elaborate California Churrigueresque style.

A vintage perhaps 1950’s or 1960’s watercolor painting of Mission Dolores, in San Francisco, signed illegibly at lower right. The work, 9 by 12″ (15″ by 18 in a quality Jerry Solomon distressed-style frame) is beautifully executed by a trained artist. The name “Helmuth Wagner” has been suggested but perhaps we are mis-reading the signature. There are minor paper digs at top above the roof and at lower left, showing as lighter areas.

Group of four early California pictorialist photographs by W. Silver-gelatin photographs on matte paper. Each photograph is signed on the reverse : Negative by W. Piatt, San Francisco (either stamped or written in pencil). Some images are titled as well. The subjects of the images are. (1) A view of the Mission Carmel with a man and his dog standing at the side entrance. (2) An architectural study of a California Mission Wall. (3) A view of working men at a train station, possibly in Monterey. (4) A ranch at the foot of Mount Shasta. All of the scenes are beautifully composed and photographed in the Arts & Crafts Pictorialist style of the era. A rare and historically interesting group of images. SIZE (of each) – 4 1/4″ x 6 5/8″. PROVENANCE: San Francisco collection. CONDITION: Excellent condition with the exception light discoloration at the edges (see photos). NOTES / REFERENCES: W. Piatt was a San Francisco photographer of some note during the late 19th and early 20th century. He is known for his views of California in the popular Pictorialist style of the times. He was an associate editor of “The Architect and Engineer of California” a monthly journal published in San Francisco and Los Angeles. He exhibited works in the Photographic Salon of the Mark Hopkins Institute during the early 1900s. Piatt photographs were published in a number of photography journals in America. He was a member of the California Camera Club where he exhibited with Arnold Genthe, Oscar Mauer. Charles Meeker and others. His photographs are rare.

Mission San Juan Capistrano Ivy Corridor Silver Gelatin Hand Tinted Edith Webb 1910s. Very warm colors that were hand tinted over a hundred years ago. Condition: Hand tinted photo silver, Print: area size 9 3/8 X 7 3/8 inches. Frame solid oak dark brown size: 17 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches. Photo is top mounted on a very decorative rough edge card board which is in turn mounted on top of the green back ground card board with waving texture. If Edith Webb’s name is now known outside of a small group of family and friends it is as author of Indian Life at the Old Missions, perhaps the finest book ever written about the California Missions. That book was the culmination of many decades of research on the missions. Her initial curiosity about the missions came about because her grandmother had resided in one of the rooms of Mission Dolores in San Francisco in the period just before the Gold Rush. Born in Utah, Edith Buckland Webb moved to California around the turn of the century. Her husband, whom she met here, was a teacher and a photographer. This latter talent of his was to be of great use during her research in the succeeding years; his first photograph of a mission shows her in a carriage with their first-born Alfred at age three months in front of Mission Dolores. In succeeding years she was occupied with raising a family, but she also applied her considerable artistic talents to the tinting of his photographs for sale. His photographs were exhibited in many salons, and he supplied photographic postcards and enlargements to several of the missions, especially San Diego, San Juan Capistrano, and San Fernando. By about 1923 she abandoned the simple tinting of photographs and began to devote herself seriously to painting, especially, though not exclusively, of the missions. These paintings were usually closely based on his photographs.
