Bottom right corner of photograph is signed “Joseph Photo” in ink by the gifted photographer. Verso is triple stamped and includes his home studio stamp. Measures 8″ x 10″ inches. BIOGRAPHY: Emmanuel Francis E. Born on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, Joseph later moved to the United States and attended the American School of Photography in Chicago. After graduation in 1924, Joseph moved to Oakland, California, where he operated a photography studio from home and began documenting life in the vibrant African American community in that existed in Central California. Starting in the early 1930s, he also working as a photojournalist for numerous Bay Area newspapers, including the California Voice, The Oakland Post, San Francisco Examiner. Joseph and his wife, Alyce, who assisted him, were especially active in the East Bay’s African American community. Original works by the photographer are especially hard to find. Oxxbridge Galleries was founded in 1987 and specializes in vintage paper items with a large selection of historical and 19th Century tintypes, daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, cabinet cards, carte des visites and other types of early photography.

Antique photograph from the collection of a historic Mariposa, California Gold Mine town Old West family. They’re the Daut, Schroeder / Schanz, and Stewart families (see some history below). Mariposa, near the west entrance to Yosemite National Park, has their Mariposa Museum & History Center where you can learn more about the area. This is a Victorian. Charles Lainer of San Francisco. In November, 1895, a fire broke out in the photograph gallery of Charles Lainer at 717 Market Street, caused by some one carelessly leaving a gas stove lighted. The gallery is in a two-story brick building, owned by Jacob Kamm. Maybe you like this photographer or subject matter, share the same genealogy with this family, or have a historical interest in the American Western trail from San Francisco to Merced to Yosemite in the Sierra Nevada? There’s something for everyone! He and his wife Christina Egenhoff were German Immigrants, natives of Hanover, Germany. I don’t know that he worked the mines, but his son, George D. When he passed away, they referred to him in the papers as “the Mariposa pioneer”. From an 1867 article: “On Monday last, Frederick DAUT and “Indian Tom, both of whom were working for Mr. MALONE, near CLARK’s saw mill, Mariposa county, were considerably injured by a premature blast while working in a tail-race of a mining claim. DAUT had the flesh torn from his hand and his eyes badly burned with powder. Tom was also burned about the face and eyes. He discovered Schroeder Mine in 1878. When Schoeder passed, his will was published in the papers and he’d written that his main executor was Fred Daut. Schroeder’s wife (Elizabeth Worther Schoeder aka grandma Schanz Schroder) had been previously married. In his will, John left his stepdaughter, Louisa C. George Dietrich Stewart his house on Saxon’s Creek with gardens, outbuildings, blacksmith’s shop, etc. Schroeder left his buggy to Fred Daut’s daughter, Emilia. He left further property to his daughter Mrs. Carl Schiffer (Theresa Schroeder Schiffer), his son Carl J. See: Mariposa Gazette, Volume LVII, Number 45, 30 March 1912.

Golden Hills, Bay View. DESCRIPTION: An absolutely gorgeous California painting by this Santa Barbara/Carpinteria artist. I’m not positive of the location, but it looks like San Francisco’s East Bay or Berkeley, view down from golden rolling hills and bushy oaks to a long view across the bay. Perhaps someone will recognize the setting. It’s beautifully painted, luscious colors and brushwork. MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES: Oil on canvas, framed in wood. CONDITION: Small areas of craquelure, tiny paint losses and touch-ups. Normal age, wear to frame. DIMENSIONS: 20″ by 25″ framed to 25 1/2″ by 30″. Joseph Edward Knowles was born in Kendall, Montana, on June 15, 1907. He grew up in San Diego, California. At age twenty, two years before the beginning of the Great Depression, he moved north to another town on the coast of California—Santa Barbara. Fletcher, who was trained in portraiture, landscape painting, and woodblock printing, was a great influence on young Knowles. It was there that Knowles learned the art of color woodblock printmaking, a medium in which he showed great skill. Not long after completing his studies with Fletcher, Knowles began teaching art. For a period of thirty years, from 1930 to1960, he taught at the Cate School in Carpinteria, California. Upon his return, he continued to teach art at various schools and institutions: Cate School, Crane Country School, extension classes at the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB), and at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art (SBMA). Knowles also served as an art education consultant for the County of Santa Barbara. Knowles died at his home in Santa Barbara on September 8, 1980. Much of Knowles’ watercolor work is associated with what has been termed the “California School, ” a loose grouping of artists throughout the state that included such figures as Millard Sheets, Phil Dike, Dong Kingman, George Post, and the Santa Barbara painters Dan Lutz and Standish Backus, Jr. The California School artists, including Knowles, were known for their fresh, direct, spontaneous style of watercolor painting. Knowles and other members of the school found inspiration in nature and the built environment alike, emphasizing elements of design in their exuberant, boldly stated, colorful scenes from everyday life. While painting in a representational manner, Knowles generally avoided photographic realism, preferring subjective interpretation of his subjects. In this, as well as in his experimental approach and vigorous brushwork, he displayed a strongly modern sensibility. Knowles often used the wet-on-wet watercolor technique as he painted seascapes and landscapes, mostly along the California coast. He also employed dry-brush techniques in many of his paintings, often leaving some of the white of the watercolor paper exposed. Some of the latter depict trees and other forms in a broken and airy manner that recalls Cezanne. Knowles’ colored woodblock prints are more reserved and exact in their draftsmanship than his paintings. Spare, clean, lyrical lines are drawn to illustrate floral motifs and boat scenes with a touch of asymmetry conjuring Japanese woodblock prints. His murals from the post-World War II period are considerably more modern in their approach and show an emphasis on design and color. California Watercolor Society (1940 – 1955). OFFERED HERE is a VERY RARE slice of Americana, from 1872. Miriam Coffin, Or, the Whale Fisherman, A Tale. Said to be the first novel to deal with whaling in Nantucket, and he is also famous for claiming Herman Melville did not write his stage works. The title page reads, New Edition, Two Volumes in One, published by H. Bound in period cloth, 8×5 inches. Some restoration to the spine cloth. There are NO COPIES OF AN 1835 EDITION. IT IS NOT OBTAINABLE, AND THE 1872 EDITION IS MEGA-RARE AS WELL. An owner name in pencil, George H. Carey or something similar, Pittsfield, Mass. He is now best known as the first person to assert in print that William Shakespeare was not the true author of the plays published under his name. His novel Miriam Coffin influenced Herman Melville, though Melville was also highly critical of Hart. Herman Melville scathingly described Hart’s book in his review as “an abortion” which deserves to be burnt in a fire of asafetida, & by the hand that wrote it. Hart was a lawyer by profession, who also served as a colonel in the National Guard and as a school principal. During this period he wrote a number of textbooks on geography. He was a longtime resident of New York and friend of several literary figures, occasionally working as a journalist. He later served as an American consul to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where he died. Hart became widely known with his novel Miriam Coffin; or, The Whale-Fisherman (1835). This was the first novel to deal with whaling in Nantucket, a subject later made famous by Herman Melville in Moby-Dick. Hart’s work was the most important fictional influence on Melville’s novel. Hart wrote the book to encourage congressional support for the whaling industry. He interviewed local people to obtain an accurate account of their lives and the workings of the industry. Unlike Melville, Hart concentrates on the community in Nantucket, and places less emphasis on the whalers. It describes the corrupt financial dealings of Miriam, a whaler’s wife, whose unproductive market speculations are contrasted with the heroic and productive labors of her husband, fighting nature and dangerous savage peoples to bring home useful raw materials. Hart’s views on Shakespeare were published in The Romance of Yachting (1848), a narrative of his travels to places that give him occasion for musings on a variety of topics. Pondering the fact that Shakespeare erroneously identifies a sea coast in landlocked Bohemia in The Winter’s Tale, Hart argues that the mixture of ignorance and scholarship in Shakespeare’s work suggests that the plays were collaborative productions, and that Shakespeare merely adapted the writings of more educated playwrights in order to make them commercially viable for the popular theater. Hart described Shakespeare as a “mere factotum of the theatre” and a “vulgar and unlettered man”. He believed that adding obscene jokes to the plays of other writers was Shakespeare’s main contribution. Unlike later such theorists, Hart did not suggest that there was a conspiracy to hide the identity of the true authors, merely that evidence of their identities had been lost by the time the plays were published. Hart asserts that Shakespeare had been “dead for one hundred years and utterly forgotten” when in 1709 old playscripts were discovered and published under his name by Nicholas Rowe and Thomas Betterton. The error occurred because Shakespeare, as a shareholder in The King’s Men, owned the manuscripts used by the theater. He speculates that only The Merry Wives of Windsor was Shakespeare’s own work and suggests that Ben Jonson wrote most of Hamlet, Shakespeare himself contributing only the grave-digging scene. Hart’s views were published a number of years before Delia Bacon outlined her theory that Francis Bacon led a group of writers who used Shakespeare as a frontman. In 1886 it was alleged by George O. Seilhamer in The Times of Philadelphia that Hart had derived his ideas from a lecture by Bacon. Seilhamer describes Hart as “an old New York schoolmaster with a fondness for yachting and a schoolmaster’s eagerness for literary reputation”, claiming that he “was the first to enunciate a distorted version of Delia Bacon’s theory, ” writing with the diction of a schoolmaster and the brutality of a sailor. However, Hart’s views bear very little resemblance to Delia Bacon’s. Hart himself never attributes any of Shakespeare’s work to Francis Bacon, but does repeat the mainstream view that Bacon was one of seven authors who contributed to the play The Misfortunes of Arthur. Hart’s views on Shakespeare were largely dismissed, since apparently he was unaware that Rowe’s 1709 edition of Shakespeare was not the first publication of the works. Many of Shakespeare’s plays and all his poems were published during his lifetime: the complete plays being published only seven years after his death in the First Folio. Up for sale is a store card token from the Joseph Brothers, jewelers of San Francisco, California, issued 1854-60. Description : The token measures about 30mm in diameter and is made from brass. It is listed in Rulau/Miller (M-Calif 6) and Kappen. This is one of the first, if not the first, documented trade tokens from the new state of California, making it a true Gold Rush era coin, and the Joseph Brothers are definitely listed at the address on the token from late 1854 to 1860. Incidentally, the Joseph Brothers were long thought to be makers of California gold fractional coins, though in recent years that view has been challenged due to extensive research. Condition : Graded at MS63 with a tan-brown-copper patina. It would be hard to find a better one. Please examine the photographs for further details and qualities.
