Up for sale is one 1942 Japanese Exclusion Zone No. 41 (San Francisco) poster. This poster is on a heavy card stock style material. The poster has some yellowing but not to bad. The history of this specific poster, This poster along with others were brought to the the Urban Ore recycling center in Berkeley California to be recycled at some time in the 1980s. The person who was recycling them stated that he found them cleaning out an office in the San Francisco Presidio. When my father passed away I found the posters in the back room of his shop. I always recall that he had them hanging on the wall and would sell them one at a time over the yeas. This story was told to me verbally by my fathers friend who was the one that worked at the recycling center. If you have any questions please ask. I will do my best to answer them. [Japanese-American] [California] Pre and post WWII partially identified Japanese-American family residing in California photo archive. The collection comprises over 60 black-and-white snapshot and studio photographs of a Japanese American family associated with California from 1930s-1950s. Many views show familiar sites in San Francisco and Los Angeles, one studio portrait bears a photography studio stamp from Oakland, suggesting at least part of the family had ties to the Bay Area. Date inscriptions on verso and on the prints largely cluster in 1937-40, with later examples marked 1952 and 1953. Measurements range from 5″ x 7″ to 1″ x 1″ with most around 3″ x 4″. The precise relation of this individual to the family is unclear, though it is possible the image was sent into or out of internment-era correspondence. The range of images includes studio, graduation, and family group portraits, casual daily life, domestic settings, and travel or social gatherings. A recurring female figure appears from youth through motherhood, and a young adult male is scattered throughout, providing a through-line across decades. One prominent image is a graduation photo of a young woman signed as “Sayoko” dated 1937. A few photos of a young boy decades later in the early 1950s is shown, he is identified as “Kenny” with one of his parents signed off as “Sayo” which could refer to Sayoko, as there is also a family portrait of her, the same boy, and a Japanese American man. The juxtaposition of these photos showcase two vastly transformative times in her life from young adulthood to motherhood, with a decade long gap during the war. Several large format photos are shown of a traditional Japanese performance with women in kimonos, possibly indicating travel between countries. Another outdoor portrait of a different young woman is identified as “Miyoshi”. There are several photos of a recurring young Japanese-American man with glasses, often donning a suit, who is unidentified. Other photos show young couples aboard a boat, possibly on local ferries, a group photo of a man with his two sons in front of a U. Air Force B-36 Peacemaker, likely dating this image to the post-war experience. Other photos show extended family members and friends in mostly western attire, images if San Francisco and Beverly Hills, as well as a few aerial views of women in traditional Japanese attire in a Japanese botanical garden. The historical context of this archive is deeply intertwined with the experience of Japanese Americans before, during, and after World War II. In the prewar years, Japanese American communities in California enjoyed relatively stable middle-class lives, maintaining social, familial, and professional connections across Northern and Southern California. The use of studio portraits evidences the aspiration toward respectability and identification within American society. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, life changed dramatically. Government forcibly removed and detained over 120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast under Executive Order 9066. During internment, personal communications, including letters, photographs, and postcards, submitted to and from camps were often censored, with “Passed by Army Examiner” stamps or other military censor marks applied. The archive is not only in documenting a single family’s trajectory through a fraught historical era, but also is a visual record of Japanese American identity, resilience, and adaptation. The continuity of portraits spanning youth to parenthood hints at the maintenance of familial memory across disruptions. The geographic spread from San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Oakland, underscores that Japanese American life was not monolithic but spanned wide regional networks. This print is very rare, as with many of the Japanese American photographers, very few of their prints survived due to the incarceration at various internment camps during WII. This print including frame is 15 x 12 1/2… Visible image is 9 3/4 by 7 1/2.. A bit is not visible, hidden under the mat, so actual size is 10×8… Small tear lower left, was conserved by adding acid free backing, de-acidified the print and housed behind museum glass.. Put back in its original batwing frame. Signed and dated 1934 bottom right. This info from talking to Dennis Reed. Kaii, whose name is formally, Jiro Kaii, arrived in Seattle in 1917. He primarily lived and worked in Denver. He was also active in California. He and his family were interned at Poston. He died in 1974 and is buried in Denver. The scene is San Francisco Chinatown – fantastic pictorialist image.

Offered is an unused real photo postcard depicting the Japanese Cruiser Kasagi in San Francisco Bay November 22. Kasagi was ordered as part of the 1896 Emergency Fleet Replenishment Budget, funded by the war indemnity received from the Empire of China as part of the settlement of the Treaty of Shimonoseki ending the First Sino-Japanese War. Participated in the first large-scale post-war fleet maneuvers of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Ran aground in heavy weather in the Tsugaru Strait between Honshu and Hokkaido en route to Akita on 20 July 1916, suffering a major hull breach in the vicinity of her second smoke stack. After salvage of some equipment, she sank on 10 August and was formally written off the navy list on 5 November of the same year. On March 21, 1907, Alcatraz was officially designated as the Western U. Unposted with descriptive pen text on the back.
