This print is very rare, as with many of the Japanese American photographers, very few of their prints survived due to the incarceration at various internment camps during WII. This print including frame is 15 x 12 1/2… Visible image is 9 3/4 by 7 1/2.. A bit is not visible, hidden under the mat, so actual size is 10×8… Small tear lower left, was conserved by adding acid free backing, de-acidified the print and housed behind museum glass.. Put back in its original batwing frame. Signed and dated 1934 bottom right. This info from talking to Dennis Reed. Kaii, whose name is formally, Jiro Kaii, arrived in Seattle in 1917. He primarily lived and worked in Denver. He was also active in California. He and his family were interned at Poston. He died in 1974 and is buried in Denver. The scene is San Francisco Chinatown – fantastic pictorialist image.

Vintage California Watercolor Painting by James March Phillips Description and Item Information Up for sale is this fabulous, vintage, California watercolor painting by the listed artist, James March Phillips. Please excuse the glare in the photos. Depicted in this colorful piece is a bustling street scene of long ago in San Francisco, including the Washington-Jackson Municipal Railway cablecar, cars, and pedestrians. The cablecar is at the Powell and Market Streets turnaround, near Eddy Street, and it is in the process of being turned around by the cablecar operators. There also are hotels, cafeterias, and a Woolworth’s store at this city location. The sight area is approximately 11 5/8 inches by 15 7/8 inches. The painting is framed under glass in a metallic-finished wooden frame with a mottled appearance and some reddish highlights; this frame is newer than the painting. The exterior frame dimensions are approximately 17 3/4 inches by 22 inches by 1 7/8 inches. Unpacked, this piece weighs over 4 pounds 14.2 ounces. This would make a wonderful addition to a collection of vintage fine art. Identification This painting is by James March Phillips; the painting is vintage, but the exact age is not known. Per Hughes, Phillips was born in Fresno, California in 1913. He lived in San Francisco by the 1930s. There, he studied with Louis J. Rogers, Alfred Owles, and at Jean Turner Art Center. Phillips died in San Francisco in 1981. He was known for watercolor landscapes of Sonoma, Napa, and San Francisco. Condition This piece looks very good overall, as shown. The colors and vivid and bright. The painting has no stains, rips, or holes. The frame has light wear overall; there is a small dent to the back side edge, as shown in Photo 9. Here is a very nice stereoview by noted California photographer John James Reilly. The un-numbered view looks down Sansome Street in San Francisco. I believe the view is looking toward Market Street. The discoverer of Gold in California that sparked the gold rush in 1848 was James W. He served under John C. Fremont in the California bear flag revolt before going back to work for John Sutter in 1847. Along with Sutter, he ended up broke after the gold rush and t o supplement his income he had these cards made to sign and sell to the public for. His autographed cards are rare and even more rare are examples in nice condition. This one is in great condition with a decent signature. You can’t see it in the picture but in the upper left corner there’s a fingerprint, probably his, from the messy iron ink used to sign his card. I had another Marshall signed card I bought from Nate Sanders years ago with a fingerprint (or thumbprint) on it (see last image). The old quill pens were dipped in iron ink and could be messy to use. The ink has faded some and turned brown over the years but still shows up quite well. Almost the size of a post card at 3″ x 5-1/2″. Only the signed card is included. The item “California gold rush San Francisco James W.
