Caprons History of California is an important post-Gold Rush history of California, filled with descriptions of all aspects of the American west. While many histories of California exist, this work is unquestionably among the best and is often considered the most desirable because of the frontispiece map. The map was the best-known map of California in the eastern states during the 1850s. It was republished annually for a time, with little or no change. Interestingly, this map was thought to be the same map included in Coltons famous Atlas of the World. In addition to the map, this 1853 first edition book includes notes on the Mexican-American War, gold hunting and mining, as well as descriptions of early San Francisco and encounters with Native American Indians. Perhaps Larneds description of this work is most thorough. [early] pages devoted to history [of California], the principal events from Cabrillos discovery in 1542 to the admission of California, 1859.
