About the artist, from Festival of Arts Pageant of the Masters: A native of Southern California and now in his twenty-seventh summer at the Festival, Michael Obermeyer received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Illustration at California State University, Long Beach. A twenty year career in illustration included works for Disney Studios, the Anaheim Angels, McDonnell Douglas, Coldwell Banker, and the United States Air Force. Because of his illustration background, he is equally comfortable with the landscape and the figure. Many of his paintings are in the U. Air Force Historical Art Collection in the Smithsonian Institute and the Pentagon. Michael was awarded the “Best of Show Award” at the 25th Annual Laguna Beach Invitational Plein Air Competition in 2023 and was presented with the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association “Lifetime Achievement Award” in 2015. He recently won the “Collector’s Choice, ” “Artist’s Choice” and the “Director’s Choice” Awards at the Laguna Beach Invitational as well as the “Best of Show” at both the Kern County Plein Air Invitational and the Grand Canyon Celebration of Art, and the Gold Medal at the Carmel Art Festival. Collectors include the Marriott Hotels and Resorts, The Irvine Company, Hoag Hospital, California State Parks and many corporate as well as private commissions. Michael is the President of the prestigious California Art Club, and is a Signature Member of the California Art Club and the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association. Currently, his paintings are showing at galleries in Carmel, Pasadena, Balboa Island and Santa Barbara. He maintains his studio in Laguna Beach, California.

Golden Hills, Bay View. DESCRIPTION: An absolutely gorgeous California painting by this Santa Barbara/Carpinteria artist. I’m not positive of the location, but it looks like San Francisco’s East Bay or Berkeley, view down from golden rolling hills and bushy oaks to a long view across the bay. Perhaps someone will recognize the setting. It’s beautifully painted, luscious colors and brushwork. MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES: Oil on canvas, framed in wood. CONDITION: Small areas of craquelure, tiny paint losses and touch-ups. Normal age, wear to frame. DIMENSIONS: 20″ by 25″ framed to 25 1/2″ by 30″. Joseph Edward Knowles was born in Kendall, Montana, on June 15, 1907. He grew up in San Diego, California. At age twenty, two years before the beginning of the Great Depression, he moved north to another town on the coast of California—Santa Barbara. Fletcher, who was trained in portraiture, landscape painting, and woodblock printing, was a great influence on young Knowles. It was there that Knowles learned the art of color woodblock printmaking, a medium in which he showed great skill. Not long after completing his studies with Fletcher, Knowles began teaching art. For a period of thirty years, from 1930 to1960, he taught at the Cate School in Carpinteria, California. Upon his return, he continued to teach art at various schools and institutions: Cate School, Crane Country School, extension classes at the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB), and at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art (SBMA). Knowles also served as an art education consultant for the County of Santa Barbara. Knowles died at his home in Santa Barbara on September 8, 1980. Much of Knowles’ watercolor work is associated with what has been termed the “California School, ” a loose grouping of artists throughout the state that included such figures as Millard Sheets, Phil Dike, Dong Kingman, George Post, and the Santa Barbara painters Dan Lutz and Standish Backus, Jr. The California School artists, including Knowles, were known for their fresh, direct, spontaneous style of watercolor painting. Knowles and other members of the school found inspiration in nature and the built environment alike, emphasizing elements of design in their exuberant, boldly stated, colorful scenes from everyday life. While painting in a representational manner, Knowles generally avoided photographic realism, preferring subjective interpretation of his subjects. In this, as well as in his experimental approach and vigorous brushwork, he displayed a strongly modern sensibility. Knowles often used the wet-on-wet watercolor technique as he painted seascapes and landscapes, mostly along the California coast. He also employed dry-brush techniques in many of his paintings, often leaving some of the white of the watercolor paper exposed. Some of the latter depict trees and other forms in a broken and airy manner that recalls Cezanne. Knowles’ colored woodblock prints are more reserved and exact in their draftsmanship than his paintings. Spare, clean, lyrical lines are drawn to illustrate floral motifs and boat scenes with a touch of asymmetry conjuring Japanese woodblock prints. His murals from the post-World War II period are considerably more modern in their approach and show an emphasis on design and color. California Watercolor Society (1940 – 1955). This sweet scene of a young child playing with her doll. Geneve utilizes a sketch like quality with a large brush strokes and light pastel colors which gives this figurative work a serene setting, a motive that intrigue many artists of the time a child holding a doll. Probably an early painting in her career with very loose brush strokes. Painting is signed on the right side. Measurements: 14 x 16″ inches and (19 x 21″ framed). It comes in very fine, hand carved frame. Geneve Rexford sergeant was born in San Francisco in 1868. When she graduated from high school she began Saturday classes at San Francisco Art Association in 1888, at the time when Emil Carlsen, landscape painter, was its Director. When Carlsen left the Art Association in 1889 to teach at the San Francisco Art Students League, Geneve followed him. She continued to study there for four months. In 1890 she travel to Phoenix, Arizona where she met her future husband Winthrop Webster Sergeant. She continued to travel with her parents and made friends with many prominent artists introduced to her through Emil Carlsen. She return to San Francisco in 1891 where she opened a studio on Montgomery Street. She continued painting until 1957. She was historically significant early California woman artist. Her work is in permanent collection in Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, California. This painting is in very fine, original condition. There are no touch ups or restorations. Unique Treasures From The U. And Around The Globe! Rinaldo (Richard) Cuneo Early 20th Century San Francisco Plein Air. This work is mounted in an extraordinary hand carved 14k gold leaf frame by “Baileys”, “The Handcrafted Frame”, of Santa Barbara, CA…. Signature impressed into the back rear of the frame. This piece is dated 1912 on the reverse. Born in San Francisco California in 1877, Rinaldo Cuneo was a painter of landscapes, still life’s and city views. He studied with Arthur Mathews and Piazzoni at the “Mark Hopkins Institute of Art”, San Francisco. He then went to London and France where he studied at the “Academie Colarossi in Paris” c. Cuneo was a member of the San Francisco Artists Association, The Society of Muralists Northern Ca. He exhibited at the Helgesen Gallery, S. 1913 and then again in 1916 and 1917; The Panama Pacific Exposition 1915; just to name a couple. His works are held at the University of Berkeley Art Museum; Sierra Nevada Museum Reno, the de Young Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Fine Art. Cuneo was commissioned by the Federal Art Project administrators to paint murals in the prestigious Coit Tower, San Francisco, c. Rinaldo came from a family of artists; two of his brothers, Cyrus and Egisto Cuneo, and several other family members were founders of the Tivoli Opera Company in San Francisco. This work is oil on board. There is a date in pencil on the reverse, 1912. Both the frame and painting are in clean and excellent condition.
