Rare original CDV of Reverend Otis Gibson (December 8, 1826 – January 25, 1889) by Shew, San Francisco with his blindstamp on the front bottom-right corner of the image. Addressed to Pok Wong Lee on the back. Gibson was a Methodist pastor, best known for his missionary work to the Chinese in Fuzhou, China and in San Francisco, California. 4″ x 2.5″. VG antique condition with some light wear.

I have here for sale a rare book entitled THE CHINESE IN AMERICA by Rev O Gibson. It is a first edition published in 1877 by Hitchcock & Walden, Cincinnati. It was written at the time when there was an influx of Chinese immigrants to western USA and there was some trepidation about how they would integrate, and in some cases out and out opposition to their arrival. Light blue hardboards with black patterning and illustrations to the front board and spine with Chinese characters and their names in bronze to the front. Spine has the same patterning in black and then the title lettering in gilt. Spine is bumped to head and tail. Brown endpapers, front one has a bookplate and there is a tear to the ffep. Small inscription to the prelim page. All other pages clean and firm. 403 pages, 18 x 12 cm. We wrap and post the parcels on Monday and Tuesday – therefore if you pay before midday on Tuesday we will get it in the postal sacks on Tuesday night, and if it is after that time then it will go into the postal service on the following Monday.
