Rare Hand Colored Frank Davey Architectural 8×9.5 Photograph of a Melo Park California Mansion and an earlier cabinet card photograph of the same home. Menlo Park, California history. Frank Davey was a noted Palo Alto California photographer. Best known for his before and after pictures of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and Stanford University Campus photos. This photograph is of a beautiful California home covered in ivy. Floral landscaping compliments the architecture. Writing identifies the home as “The Linden”. Signed the Property of Mrs. Beach Thompson, a Menlo Park resident was an accomplished engineer. He was the first to propose steel towers for electric lines. Perhaps this was the Thompson’s home. The second cabinet card photograph is of the same home at an earlier date. The people remain unidentified but dress affluently. These are exceptional photographs suitable for framing and display. One small perforation on the Davy photograph. The photo is loosely attached to the paper backing. The backing shows some wear. After a brief discussion in which Avilez told Kenny he wanted to plead guilty to the 32 charges, Kenny and Avilez appeared before the municipal court judge, who asked Avilez if he wanted to be represented by the public defender, he responded yes. Avilez plead guilty to seven counts of rape, four counts of attempted rape, one assault, and ten counts of burglary and robbery. He was bound over to superior court for sentencing when Belli arrived, who moved to have Avilez’s plea withdrawn. The superior court judge denied the motion, and sentenced Avilez to 440 years in prison, the longest jail sentence in San Francisco court history, at which point Avilez flew into a rage and was restrained (seen in the August 8 photograph). The case was appealed and the sentence overturned by the First District court, on the grounds that Avilez had been denied “a fair opportunity to secure the aid of counsel” and that the aid of counsel furnished was not effective and substantial. The sentence was cut to 220 years. In the 1940s the function and ethical responsibilities of a public defender in San Francisco was under debate. Was it the duty of the public defender to zealously advocate for the defendant, or is the public defender more of a partner to the prosecutor, collaborating with the D. To develop the facts and propose a fair resolution, not just in the defendant’s interest but the needs and safety of the community? The appellate court rejected the latter view, following the direction of the 1932 Supreme Court case, Powell v. Alabama, which issued a robust defense of the adversary process in the right to counsel. Image size 9×11 of colorful flower market 1940s! San Francisco Watercolor Prints by Frank Serratoni In the late 1940’s Serratoni moved to San Francisco from Detroit. There he first started a silk screen process with his San Francisco prints. His first effort was not successful: the process because the original color range was limited and eventually faded. Next he created a new method for his small 1940’s San Francisco prints. They were a lithographed (plates were made for each of the 12 scenes) on a watercolor tolerant paper. The watercolors were then applied to the lithographs — each print was then painted with watercolors resulting in a finished looked that approximated an original. He blended the colors giving the right tones for each area. Because each was done individually, each is slightly different. These watercolor prints provided him with a steady income supplement and they were a big tourist attraction. Serratoni watercolors hang in the Fairmont Hotel, San Francisco, CA and the exclusive men’s club, Olympic.
