It was issued under the supervision of John Ginty, who had worked in the Assessor’s Office under Washington Dodge before becoming City Assessor himself in August 1912. The Map in Detail. The city is drawn from the Golden Gate and the Presidio at the north to the San Mateo County line at the bottom, and from the Pacific to the Bay. Each assessor’s district is identified by a large numeral, with district boundaries drawn more heavily, and the small numbers inside the blocks give each block’s assessment number. A legend table explains the system: block numbers begin at the northwest corner of each district with even hundreds. The map labels the major open spaces and institutions, including the Presidio Reservation and other military facilities, Golden Gate Park and other parks, major squares, and so on. A broad belt of cemeteries, among them Laurel Hill, Calvary, and the Masonic cemetery, fills the area north of the park (these were later relocated to allow for more urban development). The Richmond and Sunset grids are laid out in neat parallel rows, though in reality there were only scattered buildings present there at the time. San Francisco in 1913-14 was a city still recovering from the earthquake and fire of 1906 and preparing for a major celebration of that recovery, the Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915. The rebuilt downtown, the new Civic Center, and the street grid extending across the western sand dunes all appear on the map. Accurate property records had special importance. The 1906 disaster had destroyed many city records, and rebuilding and speculation made the assessor’s block books central to taxation and real estate. Publication History and Census. The map was drawn from the Assessor’s field maps and was copyrighted by Ginty. It is quite scarce, with examples noted at only four institutions in the OCLC.
