Coronet head, left, within circle of thirteen stars; date below / SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA. Below eagle, no motto above eagle. John Glover Kellogg, a banker from New York, became associated with G. Richter who had been an assayer in the government assay office in San Francisco. The two worked as cashier and assayer of Curtis, Perry and Ward until the firm ceased operations and the pair went on to found their own enterprise, Kellogg & Co. On December 19, 1853. When financial institutions in San Francisco and Sacramento began noting the effects of a coin shortage, they urgently requested Kellogg & Richter to supply private coins until the forthcoming U. Branch mint went into operation. With the support of Curtis, Perry and Ward and that of Moffat & Co. Within a matter of two weeks later, on January 31, Kellogg & Richter announced they would commence operations to supply coinage and stem the shortages. The firm began issuing its private gold coins on February 9, 1854. When the new U. Branch mint finally opened on April 3, 1854, constant supply shortages caused them to stop production several times. Under the circumstances the bankers and local economy almost universally accepted these new coins being introduced. By late 1854 Kellogg & Co dissolved and reorganized as Kellogg & Humbert, who in 1855 went on to produce Twenty Dollar pieces in even greater quantities than before. Cross Draw Double Holster Rig – Can be seen on page 371, #322 of the Backyard Buckaroo book. Belt at widest is 3 1/2 inches, plus 1 7/8 inches of white fringe. Silver Concho with gold steer-head, 108 decorated studs, 10 leather bullet loops with 10-Lego USA silver bullets. Holsters are 11 inches long, 5 1/2 inches wide. Holster pockets are covered with die stamped medal with horse, cowboy and raised motif. Beautiful and unused condition. Has half of one fringe missing. All rivets have Keyston’s running buffalo. Texan or Texan, Jr. (page 374, #349, Backyard Buckaroo) or similar size cap guns look great. Guns in photographs NOT included. Please look at photos closely. They are part of the description. Even though the guns are not included adding this as a precaution. This replica gun contains the colored markings required by law, including a permanently attached orange plug. This listing is for a 1971 S PR68 Cameo Red Doubled Die Obverse. For 1971 S PCGS lumps the FS-101 and FS-102 Doubled Die Cents into the same coin number “83548” as a major variety that makes no distinction over the two. This particular coin is the FS-101, easiest to attribute by the doubling on the date and L in Liberty (the vertical line portion of L is lower on the 102). FS-101 is typically more common in lower grades, but they are much rarer in PCGS68CAM. This popular Doubled Die shows strong doubling on “LIBERTY”, “IN GOD WE TRUST”, and the date. The surfaces are nice and original red with some toning. The devices show excellent enough contrast earning the cameo designation. A beautiful coin with only a single finer example.
