Kimball with a cut-off date of September 1, 1850. This work was an attempt to create a directory for San Francisco, California during a highly unstable season as a uniquely transient location, with much of its population living in tents in the wake of the California Gold Rush of 1849. According to Kimball, . Whole streets are built up in a week and whole squares swept away in an hour. The San Francisco City Directory, by Charles P. Embossed green cloth boards, quarter leather. Decorative title page plus type-only title page. 1232 pages plus front matter and dozens of full-page advertisements. Book includes info on the city, local commerce, etc. Pages are all intact and, generally speaking, very clean with only some toning. There is some foxing and some staining near front and back. The boards are loose (as is virtually always the case with early SF directories). Spine worn as seen in photos. (no map, if there ever was one). There is some chipping to page edges, particularly in the front and rear. Nice copy of one of the rarest of SF directories. Will consider all offers.
