Richmond Ferry state highway sign. Up for sale today is this San Anselmo, San Francisco, Richmond Ferry, San Quentin sign. The four destinations are in Marin County near highway 101. The specific route here was always in the state highway system, but was only given the number 17 when the ferry was replaced with the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge in 1956. Before that, no 17 shields in Marin County! The sign is made to the 1915 specification of the California State Auto Association, with the logo at the bottom (as well as the association name at the sides) and with sharp corners. Later generations changed to rounded corners for safety, in case an unexpected kinetic event caused the darn thing to come flying through the windshield.
