Up for sale is a a 1873 Levi Strauss & Co San Francisco, California Copper Rivet Lot + Buttons. The iron buttons are rusty, but partially readable. They were found with the 1873 patent rivets, so they should be the same age. “On May 20, 1873, San Francisco businessman Levi Strauss and Reno, Nevada, tailor Jacob Davis are given a patent to create work pants reinforced with metal rivets, marking the birth of one of the world’s most famous garments: blue jeans”. Up for sale is a a nice May 1873 Patent Levi Strauss & Co. “On May 20, 1873, San Francisco businessman Levi Strauss and Reno, Nevada, tailor Jacob Davis are given a patent to create work pants reinforced with metal rivets, marking the birth of one of the world’s most famous garments: blue jeans”. Shortly after the patent was received Levi Strauss & Co. Overalls were advertised in many newspapers. See the screenshots of the old newspaper ads in the last gallery images. This rivet is in very nice condition for being around 150 years old. The rivet is made of copper and measures about 9.6mm in diameter.

Please excuse any glare in the photos. This gorgeous piece is more art deco than arts and crafts in style. It is oblong, with curved, shaped handles; it stands on four small, white feet. The well area has planish marks and the piece is smooth elsewhere. This large vessel measures approximately 17 1/4 inches long, 10 3/4 inches wide, and 2 7/8 inches tall. Unpacked, it weighs 3 pounds 4.8 ounces. Near one edge, there is an applied “JMR” monogram. This would be a fine addition to a collection of American art metal.
