Sir Robert Cowan, Prince of California Bookmen, and the Genesis of the UCLA Californiana Collection. He also served as the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library’s first librarian. In 1914 Cowan’s monumental A Bibliography of California and the Pacific West became the first monograph published by the Book Club of California. Kurutz presents an overview of Cowan’s illustrious career, the writing of his bibliography, his work at the Clark Library, and the heroic effort of UCLA to secure Cowan’s Californiana collection. Robert Ernest Cowan was born in Toronto, Canada in 1862. Robert Ernest Cowan collected a wide-array of materials on early California history that would later form the nucleus of the UCLA Department of Special Collections’s holdings in Californiana. Robert Cowan married Marie Margaret Fleissner in 1894 and they had one child, Robert Granniss Cowan. Robert Ernest Cowan died in Los Angeles in May 1942.

Including one contact sheet. An exceptional collection of vernacular photography documenting San Francisco’s all male gay motorcycle clubs in the 1970s and’80s. Clubs such as the ones shown in this collection emerged in the early 1950’s together with burgeoning leatherman culture. The groups celebrated hypermasculinity and leather fetishism, and above all else were social clubs which provided their members with a safe space for unabashed sexual expression and community, in an era where homosexuality was criminalized. The motorcycle clubs were known for their “runs” – weekend or week-long bike rides to nearby campgrounds and beaches, where they could party without police surveillance, an increasing problem in the gay leather bars in the city. This collection depicts the gay bikers partying at leather bars, on the road, and attending a pool party. Some images include bikers presenting awards on a stage and serving food and drinks at a bar, presumably for an awards ceremony or banquet celebrating the motorcycle clubs. Locations and specific biker clubs depicted in the shots are unknown. The variety of clubs depicted may indicate documentation of a multi-club run or yearly celebration of local clubs. Twenty-eight loose cyanotypes ca. 8,5×11 cm (3 ¼ x 4 ¼ in), printed on paper ca. 12,5×17,5 cm (5×6 in); one leaf trimmed to fit the image. All leaves with pencil numbers on verso. One cyanotype with an ink stamp Keuffel & Esse Co. New York, Chicago, St. Louis, San Francisco on verso. One cyanotype with a minor staining, several slightly faded, but overall a very good collection. Rare collection of early western American cyanotypes. Most photos apparently show Northern California and the Yosemite National Park est. Among them are two photos of the Yosemite Falls and one image of the Yosemite Half Dome rock formation. Fifteen photos show California rivers, lakes, and forests, tourists posing on a boulder or next to their cabin, their pack horses, &c. Four photos depict Alaskan glaciers. One of photos has the ink stamp of “Keuffel & Esser” – a major American supplier of stationery, drawing materials and mathematical instruments since 1867.
