This haunting, 23″ x 17.5″ sunset painting scene depicts a fog bank rolling in off the Pacific Ocean on the horizon and may depict a historic view of what was left of the San Francisco skyline, two years after the 1906 earthquake and fire, painted by the artist on location, in a boat on San Francisco Bay, off of the city shoreline. Though proportions and distance are a bit off, the shadowy domed structure could be the remains of the old Hall of Records building that was next to the old City Hall building, as the old City Hall may have been already demolished by the time this canvas was painted in 1908. The remains of the old Hall of Records building remained standing until 1910, when it was demolished, to make way the the new city hall building that began construction in 1913 and was completed in 1916.
