ANTIQUE Cabinet Card Set JULY 4TH PARADE PHOTOS 1903 California GOLD RUSH TOWN. EIGHT Original 1903 FOURTH OF JULY PARADE PHOTOGRAPHS from the San Francisco Bay Area East Bay Contra Costa Town of ANTIOCH. Each photographic is different view of the parade. The photographs were taken at the Antioch, California Fourth of July Parade along Second street across from the Arlington Hotel (of true crime fame in 1906 but that’s another story) which is next door to the Antioch Shoe Store R. Wall, Proprietor with the edge of the L. Meyers Store showing farther down the street. From this same vantage point each richly detailed photograph shows different scenes of the parade. Festive horse drawn carriages, Western riders, beautifully dressed spectators, decorated floats, marching bands, flower and flag draped scenery. Eight (8) original 7″ x 10″ card mounted photographs circa 1903. One mount has HOIEN, ANTIOCH, CAL embossed on the front, the rest are unmarked. VERY GOOD CONDITION: The photographs are bright and clean, the card mounts have light edgewear, 1903 is written in pencil on the front bottom margins, one mount has a penned number beneath the penciled date, one has a corner chip, the backs of the mounts have black paper remnants from being removed from an album, and a few have a penned name to the back top margin, and the mounts are slightly warped, otherwise a unique collection of original photographs. The San Francisco Bay Area town of Antioch is one of the oldest towns in California. Founded in 1850 just after gold was discovered in the region, it was incorporated in 1872 and flourished as a mining, farming, and dairy community tied to the region by the railroad and deep water ports.

PHOTOGRAPHER : Charles Taber (see bio below). SUBJECT : This business card for photographer Charles Taber, which gives his San Francisco location. It was handed out to attendees of the stage play O. Australia’ (a play about the Australian gold rush occurring at the time). The business card front shows a scene from the play. The back of the card shows the play name, the attendee and their seat number. Taber provided photographs from the play and its actors for sale to attendees. SIZE : Business card measures. 3.875″ x 2.625″, mounted photo measures 2.875″ x 1.75″. Charles Taber was a renowned American photographer, best known for his work in the 19th century. He was active during the mid to late 1800s and became particularly famous for his portrait photography, capturing detailed images of individuals, groups, and landscapes. Taber was based in “New York City”, where he operated a successful studio and gained recognition for his technical skill and artistic approach to photography. Taber’s work emerged during a period when photography was rapidly evolving. He primarily used the “daguerreotype” process early in his career, which was one of the first commercial methods of creating photographic images. The daguerreotype was widely popular in the 1840s and 1850s but was eventually overshadowed by newer processes like the “albumen print” and “tin-type”, which allowed for more durable prints and greater accessibility to the public. By the time Taber established his name in the photographic community, the “albumen print” had become the standard, and his studio began producing high-quality prints on this medium. These prints became particularly popular for portraits, as they offered a sharp, detailed image and could be mass-produced. Taber’s photographic work covered a wide range of subjects, including “portraits of notable figures”, “historical events”, and “landscape photography”. He was known for his work in capturing images of the “American Civil War”, documenting soldiers, military leaders, and civilian life. His portrait sessions were marked by an ability to capture not just the likeness of his subjects but also their personalities, often highlighting their expressions or attire in a way that conveyed their social status or professional background. Throughout his career, Taber continued to experiment with photographic techniques. He embraced the evolving technology and became a pioneer in the development of “stereoscopic photography”, which produced 3D images when viewed through a special viewer. This is a group of three original 1880’s / 1890s cabinet cards. These images feature three American soldiers from the late 1800s. The photographs, measuring 6 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches, were taken by Peerless Studio, 215 Kearny St. Each photo showcases the soldiers in their uniforms, two of the photos show the men holding their caps with crossed cannons for Artillery branch of service. On the back of each card is written information such as the name and home town of the soldier, so there is great research potential. Two soldiers are from Kentucky, and one is from Kansas. Amazing that these three photos have stayed together well over 125 years! This group is a collectible that would make a great addition to any antique photograph or military history collection.
