Washington was from an old California family. He served as the SLO City Marshal in the 1870s and 1880s, owned the Castle Saloon in the 1880s and 1890s, and later in life served as the City Clerk. Cabinet cards are 6.5″ x 4.25″ and in very good antique condition as a whole.

Rare Cabinet Photo, 3 Graces, Yosemite. Fagerstein (1828 – 1889) was active/lived in California / Germany. Gustavus Fagerstein is known for Painting, daguerreotypist, pastels. Fagerstein was born in Germany in 1828. Fagerstein studied in Berlin at the Royal Academy. He appears to have arrived in northern California about 1870. He worked in San Francisco and was active in the local art scene until 1876. He then moved to Merced and had a studio in Yosemite in 1883-86 and one in Fresno until his demise in 1889. Exhibited: Mechanics’ Institute (SF), 1871; Arriola Relief Fund (SF), 1872; San Francisco Art Ass’n, 1872-75. Similar to a Carleton Watkins photograph from the same time period. Please look closely at photos for condition. It’s not on the actual item. Also, look at the numerous other photos I have available. Real photo postcards and large format photographs. Leather photo album and 62 original photographs included, mostly cabinet cards and CDVs, with some tintypes and a couple of smaller formats.. All dating back to the Civil War period to about circa 1890. All but a couple or few are from California cities, including Colusa, Sacramento, San Francisco, Woodland, Santa Rosa, Marysville, Napa and San Jose. Although not identified, the man and woman in listing picture #4, upper left corner, appear to be William Byas Gibson and his wife Mary, so some of the people could be members of the Gibson family. The Gibson Mansion still stands and is a museum in Woodland, California (more info can be found on Wikipedia). The ID’d man, Dr. Hallam, is buried in Brownsville, Texas, so there could be a Texas connection as well; two of Hallam’s brothers are buried in California. The album is missing its clasp and there is some damage to the leather on the spine. The inside is in very good to excellent antique condition. The vast majority of photos are in very good or excellent antique condition, with a handful having some issues.

Large cabinet photograph showing the Atlas Gas Engine Company buildings in Oakland California. Photographed by R J Walters Company of San Francisco. (Empress of San Francisco) and a couple that look like tug boats. John Lorimer and Axel Warenskjold started Atlas Gas Engine Company in 1903. The specializes in gas engines for boats. They moved from San Francisco to Oakland after the 1906 earthquake and fire. They operated into 1950 and were well known for their diesel maritime engines. Image is 9 ½” x 7 ¾” and overall 12 ¾” x 10 ¾”. Image has some light soiling and nicks. The mount is worn and chipped. Review the images for better details.

ANTIQUE CABINET CARD PHOTOGRAPH OF PETER JACKSON. On the mount: 73 PETER JACKSON Newsboy NEW YORK. Approximately 6 7/16 x 4 3/16 inches. Mount: Spots and soiling on front and back. Back shows wear at upper left corner. Fair to good tones. Professional bare-knuckle boxer Peter Jackson, better known as the Black Prince and Peter the Great, was born on July 3, 1861, in Water Gut, Christiansted, Danish West Indies now the U. Virgin Islands to Peter Jackson Sr. A warehouseman from Montego Bay, Jamaica. Information regarding Jackson’s mother is not readily available. He attended the Moravian Day School at the Centre Mission in La Grande Princess for a brief period. However, his parents took him to Australia when he was 6 years old. In 1878, 17-year-old Jackson left for New York City searching for his eldest brother, James Jackson, whom he never located. He won the Australian heavyweight title four years later in 1886, knocking out Tom Lees in the 30th round. That same year, Jackson went to Dublin and won a match against Ireland’s best fighter, 20-year-old Peter Maher, in three rounds. In 1888 he went to San Francisco, California, and defeated George Godfrey to become the champion in the World Colored Heavyweight Championship. This title was in place for African American boxers who were then not allowed to contend for the world light heavyweight title because of racial discrimination. Sullivan, then World Heavyweight Champion, refused to fight Jackson because he was black even though the two men had fought in earlier matches before Sullivan won the title. In 1889, Jackson traveled to London, England, where he fought several matches, including one against the legendary Jem Smith at the New Pelican Club Gym in Soho, London. He defeated all opponents. One of the most brutal fights was with James Corbett in Benicia, California, in 1891. That match continued for 61 rounds and then ended with no winner when both boxers collapsed. A year later, in 1892, he fought Frank Slavin at the National Sporting Club in London, knocking him out in the 10th round. Jackson retired after that bout. At this point, Jackson had fought 28 of the best fighters in the world and remained undefeated. In 1893, Jackson toured with the theatrical production of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin. He was the second Black man to perform the role of Uncle Tom. Jeffries on a fourth-round knockout. Peter Jackson’s overall professional boxing record included 45 fights that were won, 28 no contests, 27 not calculated as a win, loss, or draw, five losses, and three draws. Peter Jackson, who had been refused the opportunity to compete for the World Heavyweight Championship because of the color of his skin, died on July 13, 1901, of tuberculosis, in Sydney, Australia. In 1990, Jackson was posthumously inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. In 2004, he was added to the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame in the Pioneers category.
