The second image shows downtown Benicia, with some pedestrians and store signs visible.. A very readable one handing above the door of A. McDonell’s Dry Goods & Groceries store. I found McDonell’s store in an 1860s Benicia directory. Both are 4″ x 2.5″ and in very good antique condition with light foxing.

Rare Token “Regal Products Co”. Brewery, Good For a Glass of Beer. I will be listing a number of Oregon, and Washington tokens over the next few weeks. Also a few California, Nevada, and Montana tokens as well. Along with Saloon Tokens. What is a Trade Token? About 1885, merchants all over the United States started using a form of advertising called a trade token (or chit, or bingle, or “good for”). When a customer bought something, they were given a token that resembled a coin. On the obverse, the token gave such information as the name of the business, address, town, state, etc. On the reverse, something like “good for 5¢ in trade” or “good for 1 cigar” were often used. The sizes, shapes and materials that were used to make trade tokens varied widely. The sizes ranged from smaller than a dime to larger than a silver dollar. Common shapes were round, square, scalloped, oval and rectangular. The majority were round. Although most tokens were bronze or aluminum, other materials such as paper, fiber, zinc, copper and bi-metals (bronze and aluminum) were also used. The merchandise that the token was “good for” would make an interesting collection of its own. Some of the common “good fors” were in trade, in merchandise, in cash, a cigar, a pint or a quart of milk, a tune, a shave, and a drink. Many others such as 1 box of peaches, one card game, 1 pack of cranberries, one manicure and one loaf of bread are known. Some collectors have assembled interesting collections of the different denominations represented on tokens. Although many other denominations exist, they are harder to come by and often command a premium. Please feel free to ask if you have any questions. NOTE: this series of calendar postcards was also used by: Buffalo Brewing Co. Zang: Philip Zang came to Denver in 1870 – a few years after the Civil War – having run the Phoenix Brewery in Louisville Kentucky for 16 years. His gold mining career in Leadville lasted about a month. Soon he found himself back in the more palatable environment of Denver, running the Rocky Mountain Brewery for a “Capitalist” (his official title) called John Good. Within a couple years, Zang bought the brewery from Good and soon increased its capacity ten-fold. From then until the complication of Prohibition in 1920, Zang Brewing Company was the largest beer producer west of the Missouri. Philip died in 1899 and an impressive memorial marks his grave at Denver’s historical Riverside cemetery. According to the American Breweriana Journal, memorabilia from Zang Brewing is highly prized to collectors because of the company’s historical significance and their very cool-looking advertisements.
