RARE Bill Owens Suburbia 1st Printing Hardcover w/Slipcase 1973 PHOTOGRAPHY HISTORY BOOK. For sale is this rare, 1st printing, photography book from Bill Owens titled Suburbia. Bill captured his friends and neighbors in Northern California during the late 60’s/early 70’s; capturing what was the “American Dream” of the suburban life outside the cities. The ultimate symbol of the American Dream is owning your own house. This book is basically a time capsule of that pursuit with beautifully composed and organic moments Bill photographed and included captions/quotes from those he captured. All photos are black and white. Some have said this is the most important photography book of the late 20th century with many trying to copy Bill’s style here but never duplicating it. The book is in good used condition – not new, I’d say it was enjoyed. As you will see in the photos, the green cloth exterior slipcase has some edge/surface wear from being placed on/off a shelf or handled. The book itself with a green cloth exterior has no page tears, no missing pages and no 3rd party writing. The exterior of the book has some minor wear and a slight line indentation on the green cloth front, to the left of the title Suburbia. The back cover at the very bottom edge of the spine has a small tear as seen in photo # 8. The binding is used with rubbing and some pages are a bit lifted from the spin glue – so one must be careful with turning each page. Publisher: Straight Arrow Books in San Francisco – 1973. Souvenir and Book of Information of San Francisco. Published by and compliments of Newman’s New Russ House Montgomery, Bush and Pine Sts. Army and Navy Headquarters (wrapper title). The Gabriel Printing Co. Profusely illustrated from photographs & drawings; advertisements. 19.2×23.3 cm (7½x9¼), string-tied through punchholes. Scarce, well-illustrated promotional brochure for the landmark hotel in Old San Francisco. Much of the booklet is devoted to the hotel mascot, Lester C, known as Dewey, a massive St. Bernard weighing nearly 240 lbs, and just shy of nine feet from nose to the tip of his tail, and to Dewey’s canine friends. OCLC lists three copies, at the California Historical Society, the Huntington Library, and Yale University. The Russ House was built by Christian Russ who arrived in San Francisco with his wife and sons on March 26, 1847 from New York on a boat called the Loo Choo. He was a jeweler by trade established a jewelry shop which turned into a huge booming business when the upcoming gold rush came. In fact, he expanded to different areas of the business like assaying where he was able to take a little gold off the top for each assayer. When the Gold Rush ended, he tore down those cottages and built the Russ House which became a famous hotel and restaurant. In 1902 the new proprietor Charles Newman assumed control of the house, and expended many thousands of dollars in remodeling and refitting the Russ. The Russ House contained four hundred rooms, all spacious, well ventilated. The house had the latest electrical devices. The Russ had one of the finest Gentlemen’s café and bar in the city. There are great full pages photographs of these café and bars in the book, barber shop, as well as printed program and menu of the café. There are also photos of the Russ’ beautiful ceiling decoration and paintings, including big Henry Raschen “Discovery of Gold in 1848″. There are also some great San Francisco pre-earthquake photos, San Francisco map, as well as some great advertisements. Like most everything on Montgomery street the Russ House burned in 1906, and Charles Newman lost his business. It was replaced by three story office-building. In 1927 or so, the building was rebuilt and turned into a 31 story Russ Building which, as hard as it may be to believe, was then known for a long time as the tallest building in the West. Well Worn and dusty, the string tie is original; Was found in an estate of dusty books. I started cleaning, but did not want to ruin pages. Non-smoking home, stored out of sunlight.

Antique Historical Souvenir of San Francisco, Cal. With Views of Prominent Buildings, The Bay, Its Islands, Fortifications, Etc. Heininger – Publisher San Francisco, Cal. Hardcover booklet bound in decorated pictorial cloth, embossed on the back with an emblem “Eureka” and woman with a bear. 16 accordion pages of images (photographic style drawings) plus three pages of a bird’s eye view of the city. 30 page booklet discussing the history of the city and the tourist highlights and prominent buildings. Nearly all of the buildings and sites shown were destroyed in the 1906 Earthquake and fire. Ignatius Church, Mission Dolores, Masonic Temple. Flood, Leland Standford, Mark Hopkins, and Charles Crocker. The book measures about 5.75 x 7.5 inches. No other dates are printed. Boards have edge and corners wear and the pages are separated from the binding. The front cover gilt is dulled. There is a small tear at the end of the spine. There are stains along the edge of the back cover. The title page is chipped. The remaining booklet pages have minor chipping. Pages are moderately age toned. The concertina folded images are split at folds in several places. The pages are very fragile.

All pictures were photos that were hand tinted before they were printed in book. Has some great old photos like the bay before the Golden gate Bridge, Market and Kearney Street with Model T cars and trolleys, Chinatown, Market Street looking in both directions, The Ferry Building, and a skyline picture. Booklet is in mint condition and has its original envelope also. Nice historical memorabilia for the San Francisco collector. Measures about 6 x 8 inches. Has about 16 pages. Like what you see? Here’s a really rare piece of horse racing history and the only example I’ve ever seen in many years of collecting. This is a 1897-98 Pacific Coast Jockey Club Souvenir program/yearbook covering the races at Ingleside Racetrack in San Francisco, which for a short time was a pretty major racing venue. This is not a daily program with the entries for the particular races, but is more of a yearbook publication with a list of the meet’s stakes winners, leading horses, jockeys, trainers and owners. This has a nicely made leather or leather-like cover, kind of like you’d see on a fancy restaurant menu, and then about 40 pages of great photos, information and ads about racing in that era. There’s a nice photo of Ormonde in here, who was a great horse in Europe and then came to California as a stallion. This is in amazing condition with just a spot of writing at the top of the first page and no rips, tears or creases. There is a bit of staple rust. It measures about 7″x10″. Please review the photos and use the magnify feature to review the condition.
