Professional bare-knuckle boxer Peter Jackson, better known as the Black Prince and Peter the Great, was born on July 3, 1861, in Water Gut, Christiansted, Danish West Indies now the U. Virgin Islands to Peter Jackson Sr. A warehouseman from Montego Bay, Jamaica. Information regarding Jackson’s mother is not readily available. He attended the Moravian Day School at the Centre Mission in La Grande Princess for a brief period. However, his parents took him to Australia when he was 6 years old. In 1878, 17-year-old Jackson left for New York City searching for his eldest brother, James Jackson, whom he never located. He won the Australian heavyweight title four years later in 1886, knocking out Tom Lees in the 30th round. That same year, Jackson went to Dublin and won a match against Ireland’s best fighter, 20-year-old Peter Maher, in three rounds. In 1888 he went to San Francisco, California, and defeated George Godfrey to become the champion in the World Colored Heavyweight Championship. This title was in place for African American boxers who were then not allowed to contend for the world light heavyweight title because of racial discrimination. Sullivan, then World Heavyweight Champion, refused to fight Jackson because he was black even though the two men had fought in earlier matches before Sullivan won the title. In 1889, Jackson traveled to London, England, where he fought several matches, including one against the legendary Jem Smith at the New Pelican Club Gym in Soho, London. He defeated all opponents. One of the most brutal fights was with James Corbett in Benicia, California, in 1891. That match continued for 61 rounds and then ended with no winner when both boxers collapsed. A year later, in 1892, he fought Frank Slavin at the National Sporting Club in London, knocking him out in the 10th round. Jackson retired after that bout. At this point, Jackson had fought 28 of the best fighters in the world and remained undefeated. In 1893, Jackson toured with the theatrical production of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin. He was the second Black man to perform the role of Uncle Tom. Jeffries on a fourth-round knockout. Peter Jackson’s overall professional boxing record included 45 fights that were won, 28 no contests, 27 not calculated as a win, loss, or draw, five losses, and three draws. Peter Jackson, who had been refused the opportunity to compete for the World Heavyweight Championship because of the color of his skin, died on July 13, 1901, of tuberculosis, in Sydney, Australia. In 1990, Jackson was posthumously inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. In 2004, he was added to the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame in the Pioneers category. BIOGRAPHY: Emmanuel Francis E. Born on the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, Joseph later moved to the United States and attended the American School of Photography in Chicago. After graduation in 1924, Joseph moved to Oakland, California, where he operated a photography studio from home and began documenting life in the vibrant African American community in that existed in Central California. Starting in the early 1930s, he also working as a photojournalist for numerous Bay Area newspapers, including the California Voice, The Oakland Post, San Francisco Examiner. Joseph and his wife, Alyce, who assisted him, were especially active in the East Bay’s African American community. Original works by the photographer are especially hard to find. Oxxbridge Galleries was founded in 1987 and specializes in vintage paper items with a large selection of historical and 19th Century tintypes, daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, cabinet cards, carte des visites and other types of early photography.

(one of two by the photographer in my shop)By the noted American photographer ROBERT “Bob” WERLING (1946-), this is an original gelatin silver print photograph of reflections in a western American mountain lake, pencil signed at lower right margin by the artist photographer. The scene of the high country in the American West, is perhaps Colorado, or possibly, California, such as Yosemite. Werling was born in San Francisco and very early in life showed artistic promise and drive. Brett Weston was a friend. Werling lectured at the Werkschule fur Fotographie in Soltau, Germany, and he continues to split his time between Europe and California. This photograph is in excellent condition. Measurements are 18 1/2″ by 14 1/2″ and 24 1/2″ by 20 1/2″ in silver metal frame.

Large Polaroid photo archive of a Black man named Robert Lee Jackson serving time in California prisons. 44 photos include scenes of family visits, small gatherings and even his wedding in prison. Comes with a newspaper clipping of a 1978 San Francisco Chronicle article on “The Brides of Folsom Prison”, which profiles several of the male prisoners who had married at Folsom at the time. In the article, we find out that Jackson is incarcerated for burglary and assault, with hopes of being paroled soon. Photos dated from 1976-80. Many photos are captioned, with most also being date stamped on verso. Many photos depict Jackson and his wife and two kids, who stayed with him throughout the span of his time locked up. He is seen in a variety of civilian and prison clothing throughout the years, suggesting that he was possibly in and out of incarceration throughout these four years. In his civilian clothes, he epitomizes the style of the late 1970s, with his small afro, wide lapels, and flared pants. He is pictured in stints at Folsom, California Men’s Colony, Tehachapi, and Chino state prison, suggesting that he was likely a resident of and convicted in Southern California. Three photos depict his wedding which occurred in prison in May 1977. His wife and kids often visited him, with many photos displaying them embracing inside prison facilities. Bobby and his wife are seen several times with other couples, presumably also on visitation, sat out on the lawn in the prison grounds and spending some leisure time together. This archive presents a fascinating look at prison before the mass incarceration era, showing us a period of time when prisoners were afforded frequent family visitations.
