Published for the History of the World by Henry Bill, New York. Fine early view of San Francisco, looking out over the City from the West towards Yerba Buena Island. Published only 5 years after the beginning of the Gold Rush in 1849, the view shows the boom town and remarkable growth of the City. Though by this time San Francisco was a bustling, robust settlement, it was still quite a small community, with the buildings merging rapidly into the rural surrounding hills. 16 x 9 inches, very good condition for age, quite clean and great color! Does have a very small repaired stub tear of 3/4 inch in the border margin (does not extend into lithograph).

By Samuel Maunder to Which is Added A Complete History of the United States to the Present Time, Including the Late War with Mexico, California, Etc. Edited by John Inman. The Whole Embellished with Numerous Engravings, Representing Battle Scenes, Coronations, Etc. I and 1855 Vol. 760 pages; 744 pages + 1 page ad. Black moroccan embossed leather over boards with gilt lettered spine, red labels, and gilt embellished panels. Marbled endpapers and edges. Ex-library with embossed blind seal, penciled in Dewey decimal on blank page after text in volume II. Both volumes have scattered foxing and light staining here and there in in text– volume I more so than volume II. The fold-outs are listed below. Volume I: Spine is well worn, missing labels and has cracks at back and bottom hinges though intact. , and extremities are well worn. Hand colored Map of the Nations is torn, folded incorrectly and has creases. Volume II: Spine well worn, extremities very rubbed, corners worn through, library mark in fountain pen on bottom label. Fold-out of San Francisco is in very good condition with just usual folds, a weak area at intersecting folds, tear at left just touching image area and some foxing to far right border area. This is an antique lithograph of Gray & Gifford’s View of San Francisco, 1868. It is a bird’s eye pictorial map. We believe the litho dates to approximately the same year the map was published. There is a provenance statement on the reverse, from someone who worked in the building where this piece was originally hung. The business was established in 1868, and the statement says the piece hung in the lobby from pretty much the day the building opened. The antique map comes with a separately framed key, which we believe to be a more modern print, bought to accompany the older map. The frame for the map measures 38″ x 29.5″, with the map itself measuring approximately 28″ x 20″. The frame for the key measures 19.5″ x 15.5″, with the key itself measuring 13.25″ x 9.75″. The antique lithograph is in good pre-owned condition, with some fading and yellowing, as consistent with age. There is a small tear in the sky area of the image, which we have done our best to capture in photos. The tear is “u” shaped, and there is no missing material. It is difficult to see, except on close inspection. The map is matted and framed behind glass. The wooden frame has a few dings and scratches. The separately framed key to the map is a more modern print, bought at a later time to accompany the older lithograph. It is also in good condition, with a few imperfections to the frame. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this item benefit McMinnville Area Habitat for Humanity, in McMinnville, Oregon, USA.
