Scalloped/multi-lobed metal tag with two mounting holes (as issued for side mounting on early automobiles). Issued by San Francisco in the pre-state era (California state plates began 1914); these city tags helped fund streets and were required in pairs (LEFT/RIGHT). Condition: Original as found, with expected age wear, surface corrosion, scratches, and patina. Number and markings remain clear and readable. No major bends or repairs noted. California US 101 route marker. Up for sale today is this California US 101 route sign. Made to the exact standards as used between 1928 and 1934 along this historic highway. US route 101 is the last surviving highway from the US system of 1926 that still retains much of its mileage in California. Originally starting in San Diego, the road heads to Los Angeles and then up the coast to San Francisco, and then even further north through Eureka and into Oregon, before entering Washington and curling around the Olympic Peninsula. An original of these, complete with the yellow logo of the California State Auto Association, would cost many thousands of dollars if it ever came to the market. I’ve seen only one CSAA yellow-logo US-101 shield, and it isn’t nearly as nice as this one! This sign style was the first ever US route marker ever posted in California, between 1928 and 1934. Only the first six years of production got the distinct and ornate yellow logo, and maybe only about four of this original style of signs survive to the present day. A 101, a 99E and two 99Ws – and that’s all I can think of. This is a high quality, heavy steel sign. Accept no imitations that may be one-third this price, but are one-tenth the quality. No cheap tin to be found here, with the wrong fonts, layouts, size, shape, or any other manner of embarrassing imperfection. This one will make even the most discerning collector stick their nose into the sign, as it looks that good from that close! US-101 still exists in California, though it has been truncated between San Diego and Los Angeles, being wholly replaced by interstate 5. Richmond Ferry state highway sign. Up for sale today is this San Anselmo, San Francisco, Richmond Ferry, San Quentin sign. The four destinations are in Marin County near highway 101. The specific route here was always in the state highway system, but was only given the number 17 when the ferry was replaced with the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge in 1956. Before that, no 17 shields in Marin County! The sign is made to the 1919 specification of the California State Auto Association, with the logo at the bottom (as well as the association name at the sides) and with sharp corners. Later generations changed to rounded corners for safety, in case an unexpected kinetic event caused the darn thing to come flying through the windshield. The sign is 18 1/2 inches on a side (approximately 29 inches across the long axis, and 23 up and down the short axis), and weighs 8 pounds, 12 ounces. The original of these signs exists in a private collection and is not going anywhere. This is a high quality, heavy steel remake that has the same high gloss and is indistinguishable from the original early 1910s porcelain sign.
