DETAILS: Antique leather bound photo album depicting San Francisco shortly after the 1906 earthquake. There are 116 photographs in the album and every image is of the earthquake. The photographer appears to have started taking pictures shortly after it occurred as there are photos of the city ablaze, with smoke rising from buildings. The distinguishing feature about this photo album is that the original photographer / compiler took the time identify practically every photograph by it’s location or subject matter. The handful of photographs that do not have a caption appear to be secondary shots of a previously identified but from a different location. It should be noted that the photographer did not only record the destruction. They also took photographs of the recovery effort with photos of militia and national guard troops, Everyday people going about their lives, the shantytowns and tent camps, even an ambulance horse and buggy. In short it provides an exhaustive look into the earthquake and its immediate aftermath with important factual information of the photos. MEASUREMENTS: Album measures 8 x 10 inches with 75 double sided pages. There are 116 photographs in the album. 71 of the photographs measure approximately 6.5 x 4.5, The remaining 45 photographs measure approximately 3.25 x 3.0 inches. Leather photo album and 62 original photographs included, mostly cabinet cards and CDVs, with some tintypes and a couple of smaller formats.. All dating back to the Civil War period to about circa 1890. All but a couple or few are from California cities, including Colusa, Sacramento, San Francisco, Woodland, Santa Rosa, Marysville, Napa and San Jose. Although not identified, the man and woman in listing picture #4, upper left corner, appear to be William Byas Gibson and his wife Mary, so some of the people could be members of the Gibson family. The Gibson Mansion still stands and is a museum in Woodland, California (more info can be found on Wikipedia). The ID’d man, Dr. Hallam, is buried in Brownsville, Texas, so there could be a Texas connection as well; two of Hallam’s brothers are buried in California. The album is missing its clasp and there is some damage to the leather on the spine. The inside is in very good to excellent antique condition. The vast majority of photos are in very good or excellent antique condition, with a handful having some issues.

Large velvet album (about 11 tall when closed) with 49 total images inside, all pre-1900 and original cabinet cards, tintypes and CDVs. These were mostly members of the DePew family of California and Montana… They were the relatives of the silent film cinematographer Hap DePew.. Who might be in here somewhere, but if so he is not identified and I don’t know what he looks like. There are several IDs, however. Photos are from California (Stockton, San Jose, San Francisco), Montana (Great Falls, Helena) and I did see some from Michigan as well, Lapeer and Detroit. Both the album and the photos as a whole are in very good antique condition, with a small amount of expected age-related wear. The overall album condition is definitely better than average.

This is a photo album promoting the city of San Francisco as the site of 1915’s Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE). It contains a few pages of text followed by 25 exceptional photographs taken by H. Per the first page of text: The completion of the Panama Canal, in 1915, is distinctly a Pacific Ocean event. It joins the Pacific with the Atlantic, and opens the Pacific to the commerce of the world. San Francisco, the largest American port on the Pacific, with its super harbor and its growing Oriental trade, is naturally the one fitting point where a great international celebration of this world event-the canal’s completion-should be held. It is to-day the last word, architecturally, among the nation’s great cities, with block after block of business buildings, hotels, apartment houses and private residences, all new, substantial and artistic, with every modern equipment. ” Per the finding aid for a Tibbits collection at the Online Archive of California, the photographer: “worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for 40 years starting in 1892. He photographed extensively in the American West, Canada and Mexico, documenting landscapes, towns, agriculture, parks, and other local scenes to help promote the railroad. His work as used in the railroad’s magazine Sunset started with the first publication in 1898. 16 photos depict urban areas in San Francisco and the other nine show area landscapes; all have detailed captions printed on the page. There are at least twelve street-level views including a great shot at Lotta’s Fountain at the junction of Market, Kearny and Geary Streets, one of Montgomery Street and another shows the Hotel Francis. There’s a shot of crowds at Golden Gate Park, a compelling image of the banking district, and another of Chinatown. We also see the San Francisco Bay, Mount Tamalpais, and the Yosemite Valley from Bridal Veil Meadows.
