Archive of Three Albumen Stereoview Photographs showing San Francisco city views as well as a Californian Redwood being cut by a band saw. 1870s Mounted to original photographers cardboard measuring 7 x 3.5 inches. The first shows a view of Montgomery street from the vantage point of Market, the packed dirt road busy with horse drawn carriages and small figures crossing the sidewalks. The second shows Kearney street, figures visible and 19 century buildings lining the road, their stone fronts ornately crafted. The final view shows a California redwood being cut by a band saw, its trunk laid open to expose the vast history of its many rings. Stereoviews, mounted to cardboard with two identical images side by side, were designed to mimic 3 dimensionality, a technology popular in the early days of photography. California in the early twentieth century was an object of fascination for the rest of the country who heard stories of giant trees and vast landscapes and wanted to see it for themselves, if only in these pictures. The cardboard of one image is slightly bowed from age. Sunning to the other two images. Details are clear and features of the city recognizable. Overall very good condition. Antique photograph from the collection of a historic Mariposa, California Gold Mine town Old West family. They’re the Daut, Schroeder / Schanz, and Stewart families (see some history below). Mariposa, near the west entrance to Yosemite National Park, has their Mariposa Museum & History Center where you can learn more about the area. This is a Victorian. Hugo Weitz of San Francisco, CA. Depicted is Albert J. Very dapper looking young man here. Unique 8 1/4 x 4 size w/ gilt edges. There’s something for everyone! He and his wife Christina Egenhoff were German Immigrants, natives of Hanover, Germany. I don’t know that he worked the mines, but his son, George D. When he passed away, they referred to him in the papers as “the Mariposa pioneer”. From an 1867 article: “On Monday last, Frederick DAUT and “Indian Tom, both of whom were working for Mr. MALONE, near CLARK’s saw mill, Mariposa county, were considerably injured by a premature blast while working in a tail-race of a mining claim. DAUT had the flesh torn from his hand and his eyes badly burned with powder. Tom was also burned about the face and eyes. He discovered Schroeder Mine in 1878. When Schoeder passed, his will was published in the papers and he’d written that his main executor was Fred Daut. Schroeder’s wife (Elizabeth Worther Schoeder aka grandma Schanz Schroder) had been previously married. In his will, John left his stepdaughter, Louisa C. George Dietrich Stewart his house on Saxon’s Creek with gardens, outbuildings, blacksmith’s shop, etc. Schroeder left his buggy to Fred Daut’s daughter, Emilia. He left further property to his daughter Mrs. Carl Schiffer (Theresa Schroeder Schiffer), his son Carl J. See: Mariposa Gazette, Volume LVII, Number 45, 30 March 1912.

A rare, early CA oil painting of Fort Point in San Francisco near the present day Golden Gate Bridge, signed E. Osborn and dated 1891. Well rendered piece of folk art with a fisherman and his boat flanked by an artist painting at their easel. Good condition overall for age; painting has been relined, cleaned, and restored in the past. Scattered areas of in painting (most prominent in center sky section), general surface wear, scattered small scratches, and a few very small areas of paint missing. This is an intriguing and mysterious Antique 19th c. California American Folk Art Oil painting on artists board, depicting a scene from San Franciscos Chinatown. This work dates from the late 19th – very early 20th century, and shows a dimly lit room in a fish market, with two traditionally Qing dynasty dressed men with traditional Manchu ponytails. One man is smoking a cigarette, while the other is taking a slight bow and taking what also appears to be a cigarette from the smoking man. In a dark entryway behind them, it appears that there is another man watching from afar. This painting has a very Noir vibe, and reminded me right away of the movie Chinatown starring Jack Nicholson. The hanging fish and the dim light being cast the Chinese hanging lanterns really set the mood of this intriguing and charming painting. Signed MB Plummer in the lower right.
