This Aluminum So-Called Dollar was issued as a souvenir for the California Midwinter International Exposition of 1894, held in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. This medal was produced for the expo, highlighting San Francisco’s growth and the event’s promotional themes. The “Facts About San Francisco” inscription likely tied into boosterism efforts to share statistics on the city’s population, commerce, and climate to attract visitors. The California Midwinter International Exposition, also known as the Midwinter Fair, was held from January 27 to July 4, 1894, in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park on about 160-200 acres. It was conceived by Michael H. De Young, publisher of the San Francisco Chronicle and a director of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, as a way to stimulate California’s economy amid the Panic of 1893 by attracting tourists, investors, and settlers.
