Offered is an original, collectible newspaper (NOT a copy/reproduction): STEAMER BULLETIN–FOR THE ATLANTIC STATES AND EUROPE, San Francisco, California, July 1, 1861 Rare steamship – steamer publication First year of the American Civil War “Steamer editions” are rarely found today. They were special editions meant for East Coast consumption–in this case Europe as well. This is an edition of the San Francisco Bulletin. As noted on page 4, the Daily Bulletin published every evening except Sunday. Four pages, never bound nor trimmed so it folds out to one large sheet, minor loss at the blank spine and two upper corners do not affect any text. Generally in good condition. The July 1, 1861, Steamer Bulletin represents a critical “information bridge” during one of the most volatile months in American history, arriving just weeks before the First Battle of Bull Run and months before the completion of the Transcontinental Telegraph. Published by the San Francisco Bulletin specifically for “the Atlantic States and Europe, ” this eight-page double sheet served as the definitive voice of the Pacific Coast, assuring Eastern and overseas readers of California’s steadfast loyalty to the Union despite the growing chaos of the Civil War. Because these editions had to endure a grueling multi-week journey by steamship via the Isthmus of Panama, they were printed on durable paper but often suffered from the humid, salty conditions of the mailbags, making surviving copies like yours exceptionally rare. I just acquired a large collection of antique blue & white historical plates (mostly Wedgwood and Adams). I will be separately listing all of these plates today – collect the whole set, or fill in your existing collection. This plate is: San Francisco (7 scenes). The souvenir plate shows seven landmarks in the San Francisco area: a Bay view (note no Golden Gate bridge), b Junipero Serra monument, c Japanese Tea Gardens, d Hotel St. Francis, e Cliff House from Sutro Heights, f Lick Monument, and g Mission Delores. Hallmark: printed banner “Ye Olde Historical Pottery”, Staffordshire England. Sometime between 1906 earthquake and WW1, most likely circa 1910. Dimensions: 10″ diameter x 1″ profile depth. Small rim glaze pop which could be manufacturing issue – can feel it when running hand around edge, but not big enough to be considered a flake or chip – but could have been caused by plate hanger. Underside has light crazing without discoloration. Colored transfers are intact, with good color and without scratches or erosion. No chips, flakes, breaks, mends, repairs, cracks, hairlines, blemishes, or mentionable boo-boo’s. No signs of previous repair or restoration. Average unpacked weight: 1 lb. Note some photos appear redundant because I take photos from all po ssible angles. On symmetrical items, these photos may appear redundant when there are no distinguishing differences or condition issues between side views. I try to list EVERY flaw which would be commented on something in an antique or vintage condition – this does not mean all imperfections resulting from normal wear & use require comment. My goal is to have no rude surprises upon receipt.

Coastal Survey, 1859 Single sheet. A fine and attractive engraved chart of the entrance to San Francisco Bay and including details of the mainland, with an inset map “Sub-Sketch of Entrance to San Francisco Bay” upper right and three coastal vignette views along the bottom edge. A magnificent map of San Francisco, showing the Golden Gate area, the Marin Peninsula, San Francisco, Mission de Dolores, the eastern coastline from Brooks Island to San Antonio Creek, all in superb detail. A rare separately issued engraved edition of this chart issued on heavy paper, with very wide margins and plate marks. Published separately and differing from the issue included in the official report of 1856. The vignette views are: View of the Entrance to San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz. During a European tour in 1842 Bache met with some of Europe’s notable savants, including Alexander von Humboldt, François Arago, and Karl Friedrich Gauss, and he visited key scientific institutions. The trip intensified a commitment to raising the status of science in the United States. Bache saw an opportunity to realize these goals with the sudden death, in 1843, of Ferdinand Hassler, a Swiss émigré who had become superintendent of the U. Coast Survey after its establishment in 1807. Bache and his colleagues believed that the coast survey could be used to gain support for American science, especially to obtain federal patronage. After a successful campaign waged by his friends and colleagues, Bache became superintendent in December 1843. During the two decades after gaining control of the coast survey, Bache transformed it into the most powerful scientific institution in the United States. His work, which sought to emulate European practices, was praised by European savants. In addition to hiring scientifically trained personnel, Bache employed scientists from outside the survey as consultants. By patronizing such scientific fields as hydrography, geodesy, astronomy, terrestrial magnetism, tidology (the study of the tides), meteorology, and natural history, Bache helped shape a geographical style for antebellum American science (Hugh Richard Slotten for DNB).
