Stations of the God’s-Eye Pilgrimage Places in the Haight. In 1976, Haight-Ashbury, an epicenter of the 1960s counterculture, remained a place of pilgrimage nearly a decade after the Summer of Love. This detailed map of the area, issued in the February 26, 1976 edition of Rolling Stone Magazine, celebrates this enduring cultural significance. The map highlights key spots and characters that define the neighborhood, serving as a follow-up to an article about the area’s evolution. It showcases important locations such as the Diggers store, Janis Joplin’s apartment at 112 Lyon St. #27, and the Grateful Dead House at 710 Ashbury St. Numerous photographs illustrate points of interest, including Hippie Hill, a popular public forum and social setting, and the Diggers’ Free Frame of Reference and Free Store. The Radha-Krishna Temple and Far-Fetched Foods, also known as Blind Jerry’s-the first health food store in the Haight-were notable landmarks. Cultural hubs like Mouse Studios/Pacific Ocean Trading Co. A poster gallery, and the I-Thou Coffee Shop contributed to the vibrant community. Other significant spots included Quasar’s Ice Cream, The Trip without a Ticket (a later incarnation of the Free Frame of Reference), and the Hip Job Co-Op, which provided job referrals. The map also features the Straight Theater, a movie theater converted into a dance hall, and 42 Belvedere, where Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn were famously arrested. The Shire School, a tuition-free, Summerhill-inspired primary school, and the Haight-Ashbury Free Medical Clinic, located at Happening House, were integral parts of the community. Tracy’s Donuts was a popular gathering place due to its late hours, while the Pall Mall Cocktail Lounge became known for serving Love Burgers. Other highlights include the Print Mint, a poster gallery that emerged after a Berkeley book dealer was denied a license to sell used books, and the Psychedelic Shop, which offered books, records, paraphernalia, and a meditation room. Mnasidika, the first hip shop on Haight Street, and the Blue Unicorn, the neighborhood’s first coffee house opened in 1963, were also featured. The map details the Grateful Dead house at 710 Ashbury, the Blushing Peony (also known at various times as Skinnidippin and Middle Earth), and All Saints Episcopal Church, which lent its facilities to the Diggers despite parishioner objections. The Panhandle was a scene of free rock concerts and Diggers’ free feeds, while the Drogstore Cafe and the Phoenix, a paraphernalia shop with the offices of the “Oracle” upstairs, were key spots. The map also marks Janis Joplin’s apartment at 112 Lyon, Allen Ginsberg’s sometime residence at 1360 Fell, and Huckleberry’s for Runaways, which provided housing and counseling for runaway minors. The Albin Place at 1090 Page, birthplace of Big Brother and the Holding Company, and the Tape Music Center, a rehearsal hall for the Charlatans, site of Bill Ham’s light shows, Anna Halprin’s dance troupe, electronic music performances, and the SF studio of Berkeley radio station KPFA-FM, were also noted. Lastly, the Magic Theater for Madmen Only, a primordial hippie boutique, is highlighted. This map captures the waning days of the psychedelic era and commemorates significant points in Haight-Ashbury, reflecting the neighborhood’s lasting impact on American culture.
