Group of four early California pictorialist photographs by W. Silver-gelatin photographs on matte paper. Each photograph is signed on the reverse : Negative by W. Piatt, San Francisco (either stamped or written in pencil). Some images are titled as well. The subjects of the images are. (1) A view of the Mission Carmel with a man and his dog standing at the side entrance. (2) An architectural study of a California Mission Wall. (3) A view of working men at a train station, possibly in Monterey. (4) A ranch at the foot of Mount Shasta. All of the scenes are beautifully composed and photographed in the Arts & Crafts Pictorialist style of the era. A rare and historically interesting group of images. SIZE (of each) – 4 1/4″ x 6 5/8″. PROVENANCE: San Francisco collection. CONDITION: Excellent condition with the exception light discoloration at the edges (see photos). NOTES / REFERENCES: W. Piatt was a San Francisco photographer of some note during the late 19th and early 20th century. He is known for his views of California in the popular Pictorialist style of the times. He was an associate editor of “The Architect and Engineer of California” a monthly journal published in San Francisco and Los Angeles. He exhibited works in the Photographic Salon of the Mark Hopkins Institute during the early 1900s. Piatt photographs were published in a number of photography journals in America. He was a member of the California Camera Club where he exhibited with Arnold Genthe, Oscar Mauer. Charles Meeker and others. His photographs are rare.

Prune orchards of Santa Clara Valley during Spring. Measures: 20″ x 14 1/2″. Back is stamped Walter A. Scott Commercial Photographer 583 Market St San Francisco. Great historic photo perfect for a Silicon Valley Tech Company Headquarters Art or Area Estate Collection. Light fading to colors likely. Back has toning with some smudge marks. My watermark is not on actual item. This was removed from framing. The corrugated cardboard backing showing the framer of Webbs of San Jose will be included for historical purposes. One reference to Webbs I found online was in 1954 stating that Webb’s had been in business for 40 years then but had a few locations. Unknown to me how long the First St location had been there. This will be safely packaged. Portion of Walter Amos Scott’s bio from A Guide to Walter A. Scott’s interest in photography increased after the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake (SFMM Accession Ledger). Walter was a prolific amateur photographer until 1910, when he made the shift to commercial photography (San Francisco City Directories for 1909, 1910). In addition to his commercial business, Walter A. Scott was involved in photography associations: the California Camera Club of San Francisco and the Photographers’ Association of America. This haunting, 23″ x 17.5″ sunset painting scene depicts a fog bank rolling in off the Pacific Ocean on the horizon and may depict a historic view of what was left of the San Francisco skyline, two years after the 1906 earthquake and fire, painted by the artist on location, in a boat on San Francisco Bay, off of the city shoreline. Though proportions and distance are a bit off, the shadowy domed structure could be the remains of the old Hall of Records building that was next to the old City Hall building, as the old City Hall may have been already demolished by the time this canvas was painted in 1908. The remains of the old Hall of Records building remained standing until 1910, when it was demolished, to make way the the new city hall building that began construction in 1913 and was completed in 1916. Early Modernism Abstract Painting by Adelaide Cadogan, San Francisco, California Artist. Stunning small modernism abstract painting in original wood frame. Sight size: 6 ½ h x 4 ½ w. Original wood frame size 10 ½ h x 8 ½ w x 2d. Painting is in very good condition, the wood frame has some scuffs, some scratches. Artist Background History: Adalaine Boudreaux Cadogan and Edwin Anthony met while attending the San Francisco Art Institute and later were both active members of the Marin Society of Artists. Adalaine devoted herself to painting and sculpture and Edwin worked primarily in oil painting and stoneware pottery. He was an alumnus of Berkeley High School and served as the head the art department at College of Marin, where Cadogan Hall is named in his honor. Adalaine and Edwin both experienced financial difficulties while in art school and understood the great impact scholarships could make during this early phase in an artists career. The Cadogans never had children, but in a handwritten letter to the foundation, Mrs. Cadogan wrote that she wished for the art students of the future to be our children.
