One of twenty prints by different artists commissioned by the San Francisco Chronicle as a continuation of the WPA Federal Arts Project. Loran was an important California modernist, widely exhibited and collected throughout the 1930s and 1940s. Born in Minnesota in 1905, he studied at the Minneapolis School of Art, and won the Paris Prize in 1926, where he lived in Paul Cézanne’s studio and saw the works of Picasso and other modern artists. He moved to California in 1936 and had a long teaching career at UCLA Berkeley. His works are held in numerous private and public collections, and he is among the best known of California’s modernist artists of the late 1930s-1940s. His work from this period is iconic WPA style, although later he would turn to abstract art. You can make out Alcatraz Island across the bay, and the Marin headlands beyond that. The Matisse-inspired billboard adds a spicy interest! Happy to answer questions.
