This is an illustrated map of Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, issued in 1956 by the Hubbard Advertising Agency. Following Ted Hubbard’s distinctive graphic style, the map mixes wit and research to paint a picture of this exceptional American urban park. Golden Gate Park in San Francisco is a vast and historic park constructed in the 1870s. Among its features, we see the Conservatory of Flowers, one of the oldest buildings in the park. Situated across from each other across the Music Concourse are the original De Young Museum, which was damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, and the California Academy of Sciences with the old Steinhart Aquarium. Other prominent areas include Strybing Arboretum (now known as the San Francisco Botanical Garden), the Japanese Tea Garden, Kezar Stadium, Stow Lake, and more. At the western end of the park, we find Beach Chalet and Ocean Beach. Children’s Playground and Carousel, one of the oldest public playgrounds in the United States, the Dutch and Murphy Windmills, and the Polo Fields are also all indicated.
