It consists of a photographic record, mostly via commercial photographs by several studios of the time and some that are currently unidentified; supporting these images are ephemeral paper related to the journey, noted below. From internal evidence, our research indicates that the Barkers were originally from the Central Valley area of upstate NY state and that they had the wherewithal to pursue their traveling interests (ephemera laid-in is evidence of further touring, to Europe – please see list below). The items are pasted-in to the album and each photo has a short description handwritten above the picture; we’ve noted the photographic studios where known and the number of images from each, as they proceed through the album; notable defects are noted as present, per picture; we count 84 individual photographs, sizes as noted. These are listed in two columns and reflect the travel between various cities, from New York to cities in the south and thence to California, and back again. In the last leaves of the album are found (23) large cyanotypes, most of them very sharply detailed and approx. ½ size, pasted-in one to a page. Views of the exterior of a large very stately late-Victorian style home. Plantings; the countryside; young deer on farm grounds. (4) of classical figure statuary two of these with statuary maker marks of J. Fiske visible on the base. Two estate firefighting rigs, one identified by marking Pioneer No. 1 and the other a four-wheeled cart carrying metal canister fire extinguishers of the time. Many of the buildings on the estate with signage: Coal Bin; Pigeon Coop; Orange County Kennels; Engine House; Pig(g)ery; Hen(n)ery; a blockhouse tower with the name of Fort Maplehurst. Yvette Guilbert; Programme Hippodrome Tous Les Soirs Jeanne d’Arc, starring Mlle. Litini; an unbacked G. 1/2 albumen photo of the Central Station Hotel Hope St. Glasgow, with a notation in pencil on reverse; Paris Soiree Concert des Ambassadeurs program, Paula Brebion, Ouvrard, Sulbac in various skits & song numbers; menu from Le Doyen, reverse with the extensive carte des vins and with the traveler’s notation, “finest restaurant in Paris”; and a small mailing envelope from Drexel, Harjes & Co. Occasionally, the manuscript spelling of a word is in error and the sense remains clear; the script handwriting very legible and informative. 11″ x 13 1/2″ size; horizontal format; bound in brown heavy pebble-surface cloth, leather corners & spine, with gilt line-and-scroll rules. With the’title’ in three paper strips affixed to the top cover: “Book IIII – Tour of 1899 – From the Atlantic to the Pacific” Wear to corners and edges of the binding. Items affixed to good quality paper; some of the photographic surface with some rippling; a few leaves detached; a couple of pages with evidence of some prior removals; several leaves at back are blank. Album, photographs and ephemeral materials in good to very good condition.
