RONDAL PARTRIDGE Signed 1969 Photo Mutual Benefit LIfe Building San Francisco
RONDAL PARTRIDGE Signed 1969 Photo Mutual Benefit LIfe Building San Francisco. Vintage Rondal Partridge 8 by 10 inch, black and white, silver gelatin photograph on single weight paper of the Mutual Benefit Life Building, 1 California Street, San Francisco, California, 1969, signed by Partridge on the verso with his rubber stamp, in near fine condition as the upper left corner is bumped. This spectacular photograph showing San Francisco under construction on Market Street with the Ferry Building in the background was taken by Partridge for the Welton Becket and Associates architectural firm that designed the building. Typically, Partridge printed and stamped only a few images in very limited numbers that were used by Becket to promote their work. When I talked to him about ten years ago, Partridge told me that he kept no copies, so work from this period of his life is very scarce. Photo of the building is reproduced on page 73 of Total Design: Architecture of Welton Becket and Associates by William Dudley Hunt, Jr. McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1972, which is the major monograph on the architectural firm. Rondal Partridge is the son of Imogen Cunningham and started his photography career in the 1930s as an apprentice to Dorothea Lange and Ansel Adams. In 2003, the California Historical Society Press published the first substantial monograph on the photographer, Quizzical Eye: The Photography of Rondal Partridge by Elizabeth Partridge and Sally Stein. As described in the book, Partridge was a master of architectural photography. This is an excellent example of his outstanding eye. His work compares favorably with other famous architectural photographers such as Julius Shulman, Ezra Stoller, and Marvin Rand.
