The Mission Cook Book Printed in San Francisco California 1889
The Mission Cook Book Printed in San Francisco California 1889. The Mission Cook Book. 8vo, 176 (of 180) pages, lacking pp 1-4, 17-18, 25-26, 53-54, 131-32, and 177-180. These are likely mostly advertisement leaves. Scarce fundraising cookbook compiled by the ladies of the Immanuel Baptist Church in the Mission District of San Francisco, published to help fund the construction of a new church. This copy lacks the title page, but OCLC entries indicate that this was published in San Francisco by Bacon & Co in 1889. The church is notable as the scene of the infamous “Emmanuel Baptist Church Murders of 1895″ that sent the city into an uproar. Many unusual recipes are present, including stewed and fried brains, mock duck, cooked squirrels, macaroni and cheese, coconut pudding, roly-poly pudding, and pickled watermelon. Four in OCLC (Texas Women’s University, UC Berkeley, UCSD and The Library of Congress–the LOC copy is missing many of the same pages as this copy, suggesting that some copies were bound differently or that people liked to remove the attractive ads, a few of which remain here). In fair condition with tears to two leaves up to two inches, wear, soiling and staining to covers, toning, smudging and staining to pages, hinges reinforced with old tape, old trade card affixed to front pastedown.
