In his later years his style was influenced by the Barbizon School Landscape painters. This was a precursor to the Impressionist School. Keith drew his inspiration directly from nature. William Keith found favor with the culturally aspiring San Francisco nouveau rich. He was so sought after in his day; he was the wealthiest, most sought after artist in California. He was known in some circles as the Dean of California Painters. His San Francisco studio was destroyed in the fires of the 1906 earthquake. Taking with it many works of art.
